Red hat Openshift for FR 26

Hello Commvault Community,

I have a question about configuration Red Hat Openshift in FR26.

The documentation shows that Red Hat Openshift is deprecate from version FR26, hence my question is whether it is possible to use the Openshift solution under a Kubernetes configuration, to which it is recommended to go?

Red Hat OpenShift: Deprecated
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.26/essential/121691_red_hat_openshift_deprecated.html

“Support for Openshift's OADP for backups?”

OpenShift is a new solution they have bought and want to protect their data with it and through Commvault. There isn’t difference for the client whether the solution in the environment will be named OpenshiftVSA or Kubernetes. It is important for the Customer to be able to protect data via Red Hat Openshift and via Commvault.

Will It still be able to use Red Hat Openshift for FR26, but under a Kubernetes configuration? Has their purchase of this solution been unsuccessful for protection in the Commvault environment and they need to find a different solution?

However, if there is a chance to protect data by configuring Openshift, two questions arise:

  1. Will the Kubernetes configuration on the Commvault side work properly with the actual Openshift cluster solution?

  2. However, if there is a workaround for the protection of data from the Openshift cluster, can we expect any problems with regard to a different scope of backed up data (or other limitations)? What data and components will be backed up then.

Thanks&Regards,
Kamil

Yes OpenShift was the first container platform we supported (lets ignore Docker for the moment...).

With supporting K8S, the functionality was merged in with the Virtual Server Agent. From OpenShift 4.2 and onwards yo ucan use the regular VSA/K8S configuration to support it.

That’s a good question, @Kamil !

I’m going to reach out to folks on the Red Hat and K8s side internally to get a best answer for you!

@Kamil , I just heard back from the support manager for the team that handles Kubernetes and he advised that you should absolutely use K8s as a backup solution here.

Let me know if that answers your question (and makes your customer happy)!

Thanks so much for verifying this for me.

Then the question arises why during configuration you can only see a few projects in the Openshift cluster.

The Openshift cluster consists of 4 physical machines (workers) and 3 virtual machines (masters). Additionally, a linux machine is installed, designed to be a cluster management station and now to work with Commvault.

Why Commvault can only see a few projects, while the user who is configuring this has access to everything because he is added to the cluster admin role.

Regards,

Kamil

Good question, @Kamil .  I’m not seeing any obvious differences between the various projects.

Can you open a support case and share the incident number here?
