Hi experts,

IHAC who runs SAP HANA on vmware vsphere and also CVLT to protect it.

We’re performing  agent based application backup to ensure the consistency of SAP HANA database.

And we’re about to do the agentless backup using vmware snapshot feature.

But customer is reluctant to do a vm level snapshot backup because they experienced snapshot backup job caused the unexpected hang on vm when they ran Veritas NetBackup.

We don’t expect application level consistency by performing vmware snapshot technology, not Intellisnap.

Just want entire disk image(vmdk) to be protected in terms of system level.

Do you guys have any experience or confirmation that CVLT snapshot backup on vm which hosts SAP HANA won’t cause any problem while performing a backup?

Thanks

Hi @Hongmo Kim

SAP HANA is not supported for application aware backups using VSA agent

SAP HANA is a in memory database and Snapshot taken on the VM level when the DB is up and running may not be consistent.

@Gowri Shankar

Thanks for the response.

I’m aware of that vm level image backup doesn’t guarantee the consistency of SAP HANA application.

The reason why we try to do a snapshot backup is to protect vm image(OS), not HANA DB.

(We’re performing the agent based backup for HANA DB)

So I asked you guys if it could cause a hang or failure by just performing snapshot backup the SAP HANA vm just like NBU.
