VMware VM backups with Virtual RDMs

Hello!

I am running VMware VM backups via SAN transport mode. Several of the VMs have virtual RDMs.

I would like to exclude them from the VSA backup and run them via FS iDA inside the VM.

How to achieve that?

Regards,

Pedro

HI @PedroRocha

You should be able to achieve this using filters to filter them out

Thanks!

Disk filters is the way. I only wish there was a way to specify all virtual RDMs for all VMs in an easy way, without having to manually selecting each RDM (consider there is no name pattern, or SCSI name,)

Technically, if you do nothing the VM should still be protected except for the RDM disks. On feature release 11.23+ the job completes normally but should print a warning in the events about it.

https://documentation.commvault.com/additionalsetting/details?name=%22IgnoreUnsupportedDisks%22&id=1318

If you want to filter out the entire VM, you could use a tag on them in vCenter and use a filter rule to exclude VMs with a specific tag

From the docs I see that the virtual RDMs are protected by default, is that right?

"Virtual RDMs are protected by both streaming and IntelliSnap backup jobs."

I wish I could filter them out just making a filter where I specify: "filter virtual RDMs"
