Question

Can we exclude Transaction Log backups for SQL Simple Recovery DBs from a Plan?

We are moving from Storage Policies to Plans and have Plans for databses where we run Transaction Log backups 24/4 each 15 minutes.  For Simple Recovery Mode subclients we only run daily Fullbackups, but when moving to a common Plan it triggers Transaction Log backups for these Simple Mode subclients as well. There are a lot of jobs with 0 bytes of data and it makes a mess.

Is there a way to skip these Transaction Log backups for SQL databases in Simple Recovery Model?

With a service level approach to setting up common Plans, I don’t want to set up separate Plans only for these Simple mode SQL backups.

At this point I have removed all Database schedules from the Plan and configjred them separately, but this adds complexity. A sinple way to exclude Simple mode SQL from the Transcation Log schedule in the Plan would be really nice.

Hello @Patrik

Correct by default when a transaction log backup runs it will skip any database if its simple recovery model. The recovery model can be changed at any time on the database. The SQL agent will detect the recovery model at the beginning of the backup. The backup runs against all DBs in the subclient so I am not sure the total ask here. You can change the behavior of simple DBs using the control panel → SQL agent config if you want to allow the backup to convert.

If you have multiple subclients configured you can setup a different plan for those simple subclients

Thanks Scott,

As far as I recall Transaction Logs does not run for Simple Mode databases, and I have verified that no selections are made in the ControlPanel SQL settings, so in this case I cannot understand why the Plan TransLog schedule triggers the TransLog backups for my Simple Mode Databases.

Subclients were initially created with the type set to None, by I have changed that to Simple Recovery Model. Still TransLog backups are initiated from the Translog schedule in the plan.

On top of this the default Incremental schedule in the Plan triggers a differential backup on all SQL databases. That does not fit with the strategy to only run daily Full backups for Simple Recovery model databases.

I will do some further testing, but may have to revert back to Storage Policies and Schedule Policies for the SQL backups for now.
