My bad, I misunderstood and now i can't figure out how to edit my question. We currently have 4 commserves, all very large. We use Hyperscales in all the environments. We are going to set up two more and are considering having a separate install of SQL so it can be managed by the customer apart from Commvault. I was just wondering if anyone has done this and your experience doing it that way? THx

Hi @Chris Colhard ,

it’s not possible nor supported to separate the CS installation from the SQL Server installation:
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.40/expert/pre_installing_microsoft_sql_server_software_on_non_cluster_environment.html

But what exactly do you mean with “so it can be managed by the customer“?

The customer has to “manage” it anyway; e.g. install the SQL CU updates.

Thanks,

Ralph

Well right now we don’t allow the customer access, we manage the infrastructure and they manage day to day backups. Because of vulnerabilities they want access to not only scan but patch etc. Since my team does not have a sql dba we rather the customer’s dba team handle that thus the discussion of having it installed separate from the cv package. thx

Why can they not manage the SQL packaged with Commvault?

Thats a good question, not sure...this was an initiative started by someone else and we haven’t met on it yet. Right now we don’t want them to have admin access to all the Commvault environment so maybe to separate that? Will find out soon. Thx

I have a feeling someone is misunderstanding.  Commvault packages SQL Server Standard and it’s a normal installation (not unique to Commvault).  It can be managed just like any other SQL Server.  No access to Commvault is required to manage it -- other than the database will contain your CV data, but a “standalone” SQL Server install would be no different in that regard.

Thanks,
Scott
