Install Commserve on an existing media agent.

We migrated all data to a media agent in the cloud. The Commserve is still local in our company. We would like to install the Commserve on our media agent in the cloud. (Data is only ussed for Archive, backup is moved to cloud)

I tried to install the software on the media agent, but you cannot select the option to install the Commserve software. I must uninstall the media agent software and then install the Commserve and media agent software. We are running 11.32.XX (no production only archive)
Is there a best practice to do this? Is there any documentation?

Yes, it is possible to move your CommServe to a server that is currently functioning as a Media Agent, but there are important requirements and best practices you must follow:

Key Points and Best Practice

  • CommServe Must Be Instance001: The CommServe software can only be installed as Instance001 on a server. If your Media Agent is already installed as Instance001, you must uninstall all Commvault packages from the server before installing the CommServe.
  • Uninstall Media Agent First: Uninstall the existing Media Agent software from the server. Document the current Media Agent configuration (Client Name, Identifier, installation location, and installed packages) so you can reinstall it later.
  • Install CommServe: After uninstalling, install the CommServe software. This will create Instance001 for the CommServe.
  • Install Media Agent as Additional Instance: Once the CommServe installation is complete, you can install the Media Agent software again as a new instance (Instance002) on the same server.
     

    This process is the recommended and supported method for moving the CommServe role to a server that previously functioned as a Media Agent. There is no supported way to install the CommServe on a server that already has a Media Agent instance without first uninstalling the Media Agent.

    If you need to retain the same client name for the Media Agent, ensure you reinstall it as the same client after the CommServe installation.
