Hi all,

We need to apply security patches to the SQL Server used by our CommServe.
We'll patch manually, without any third-party tools.

I found this doc:

https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/essential/including_windows_os_and_sql_server_updates_when_installing_commvault_feature_and_maintenance_releases_01.html?_gl=1*zcnoq0*_gcl_au*NzI5MjE2NzU0LjE3NTQ1OTEyMDI.*_ga*MjAzNTA5NjMzMy4xNzU0NTE3NTM5*_ga_M2TFPKFW4N*czE3NTQ1OTEyMDMkbzEyJGcxJHQxNzU0NTkxMjM5JGoyNCRsMCRoMA..

But it seems focused on upgrades, and I’m not sure if that’s the same as manually patching SQL

Has anyone done this? Is it safe to patch SQL manually, or can it cause issues with Commvault?

Hi @Alexis ,

Yes, it is generally safe to manually apply SQL Server patches on the CommServe, provided that you're applying supported cumulative or security updates (not major version upgrades) and follow best practices to ensure system stability.

Key Recommendations:

  • Take a full Disaster Recovery (DR) backup of the CommServe before patching.
  • Confirm SQL Server patch compatibility with your Commvault version using the official compatibility matrix.
  • Suspend active jobs and stop Commvault services before applying patches.
  • Perform patching during a maintenance window, then restart services and validate that CommServe operations (job execution, console access, dashboards, etc.) are functioning correctly.
  • Avoid in-place major SQL upgrades (e.g., 2016 → 2019) unless performed per Commvault’s documented procedures or with support assistance.

Following these precautions helps ensure a smooth and safe patching process without impacting CommServe functionality.
