Migrating tapes without tape library

Hello,

One of our clients has an On-prem CommCell with IBM 3576-MTL6 library with 6 drives and over a thousands tapes. Considering customer is planning workloads/clients migration to a new CommCell is it possible to migrate indexes of these tapes and lift and shift actual tapes, however without migrating the actual library and tape drive hardware. What is the best option?

Thanks

Tomas

Hi @Tomas Koller ,

Good day!

Will you be doing commcell migration for the clients ?

Hello back @Sureshkumar S ,

Workloads (virtual) are going to be migrated to new cell. Can we retain existing agents installed on them to use in the new cell? Another suppose Q is if VSA that can be migrated alongside workloads and retain configuration/reconnect to new commcell.

If yes that leaves question if legacy Commserve server, MAs and the Library and Tapes need to migrate or configs can be exported and merged with new cell config.

In case you perform a CommCell/CommServe migration then all existing entities will be preserved.

Hi @Tomas Koller,

you can perform Commcell migration as already mentioned and described here: CommCell Migration Overview.
Basically you export and import metadata from one Commcell to the other and reuse the clients on the new cell after updating the clients via Control Panel -> Name Management.
Make sure you have a new target storage policy / plan already in place to assign them to the migrated clients.

Media Agents could also be reused, but from my experience it is easier to just reinstall them on the new cell first and migrate the clients afterwards so you can assign old libraries for restores directly to them (assuming you want to preserve exisitng data as mentioned).

For the tape library you will need to create a new one in the new cell as the migrated one will be deconfigured.
You could just delete it after migration and reassign the tapes from “orphanded media” inside the console. This way you have the existing media visible in the new library.

Hope that helps 🙌🏻
