Hi folks,

we are planning to upgrade from 11.28 to 11.32, but we have some questions that maybe you can helps us clarify.

Our setup is:
Commserve installed in a cluster configuration with 2 servers
Windows Server 2016
SQL Server 2016

At this moment we are not planning to upgrade to a new Windows version or doing a hardware refresh.

Some scenarios we are considering.

1) Upgrading only the Commvault packages, by using the Download Software within the Commcell. Is there some downside with staying in SQL Server 2016?

2) Upgrading SQL Server + Commvault packages, at the same time, by using the Full Media Kit download (including SQL Server packages). I have tried this in a lab, but it didn't upgrade SQL Server, only Commvault packages.

3) Can we upgrade in steps like this?
3.1) upgrade just the SQL Server using the 2019 install package included in the Full Media Kit. Upgrade on the passive node, then failover the instance to it, then upgrade the other node.
3.2) upgrade the Commvault packages.
We are considering this stepped installation because of this page:
https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/upgrading_commserve_computer.html#before-you-begin

4) Uninstalling Commvault and SQL Server and reinstalling everything using the DR Backup to recover. We will have to configure all tape and disk library again?

Hello @DJacobs

FR32 supports SQL 2016/2019/2022

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/commserve_server_system_requirements_windows.html

FR34 Does not support SQL 2016 anymore and you need to be on SQL 2019 or 2022

https://documentation.commvault.com/2024/expert/commserve_server_system_requirements_windows.html

FR36+ Does not support SQL 2016 and SQL 2019 and you must use SQL 2022

Given you are planning on just moving to FR32 i would recommend not upgrading your SQL version and just do the FR upgrade.

When you move to FR36 and above you will need to upgrade OS as well as SQL version and i would just jump to 2022SQL with the OS as well.

NOTE: In all version of CV we expect the SQL to have the CU updates applied. I recommend checking this and upgrading it as needed.

Kind regards

Albert Williams

Agree with what has been said.

Either go full on and do OS+SQL+FR at this time, which will you the option to carry on installing FR updates in the future.

Or keep it as simple as possible for now and just do the FR upgrade. That should give you another couple of years until FR32 becomes out of support on June 2026 - At that point you will then need to do the OS+SQL upgrade since the following LTS (FR36) only supports SQL Server 2022.
