Hello.  We sent 300TB of backup jobs to AWS when we were squeezed for space.  Now that we have the additional space, what’s the best way to copy the data back down?  These jobs only exist in AWS with a long retention so I can’t just let them age naturally.

We have 3 copies for the storage policy:

  1. Primary
  2. Pure Storage Flashblade - Synchronous Copy
  3. AWS - Selective Copy; “Do not select Automatically”  (we manually choose the jobs)

What are my options?

Thanks!

Dan

Hi,

The only 2 options here is either to configure a new storage pool and then create a new storage policy and pick the jobs you wanted to copy to onprem storage and run the aux copy job, but by doing this there might storage consumption as we creating a new storage pool and new storage policy copy.

The second option is to promote the AWS copy as primary copy.

These are the 2 options, please let me know incase of any queries.

Karthik

Thanks for your reply.  When creating a new Storage Pool and Storage Policy, there are no jobs associated with the policy, so there’s nothing to pick for copy.  How do I pick jobs from one Storage Policy to copy to another?  I’ve always thought this wasn’t possible.

If I make AWS copy the primary temporarily is there any config changes I need to preserve the real Primary and 2nd DR copies?  After the copy from AWS to a new “Copy-4”, can I re-promote the original Primary with all its jobs intact?  I’m fairly confident that the backup jobs will follow its retention rules, but just want to be sure the existing jobs will remain throughout this procedure.

Thanks.

I ended up doing this...

  1. made AWS a sync copy, removing the source (making primary its source).
  2. made AWS the source for the Flashblade
  3. manually picked needed jobs
  4. ran Aux copy

Hi,

After configuring a new copy if you are not able to view the jobs from copy level you can view jobs with jobs that will not be copied from the advanced options of the copy.

Right click on copy->view jobs->advanced->jobs that will not be copied.

And from here you  should be able to view the list of jobs and you can manually pick the jobs for the copy. But as you mentioned earlier the jobs is exist only on AWS , once the jobs are copied to new storage you can promote the aws copy or new copy as primary copy as original copy does not have all the jobs.

Please let me know incase of any queries.
