Question

Is there a way to specify specific VM disks to include vs the default exclude behavior?

We have quite a few VMware VMs being backed up via VSA streaming backups that have multiple scsi disks defined. We would like to be able to specify only the system disk (SCSI 1:0) and exclude any other disks. However, the default VM Disk filter in the subclient only allows for excluding disks. We’d like to be able to just specify which disk to include rather than which disks to exclude. Is this possible to do somehow? Thanks!

Hi @SCI85_BJC ,

It is not possible to directly specify only the disks to include in a Commvault VSA backup; the disk filter functionality only allows you to exclude disks, not to include specific ones. You must define which disks to exclude, and all others will be backed up.

  • Commvault VM disk filters are exclusion-based only; you cannot create an "include-only" filter for disks.
  • To back up only the system disk (e.g., SCSI 1:0), you must explicitly exclude all other disks by adding them to the disk filter list.
  • There is no built-in option to select only a specific disk for inclusion while ignoring all others.

Hi Rohit! Thanks for the reply. Guess I’ll need to submit a feature request for this one then :-). Thanks again.
