Hello Team,

We are currently using HP LTO7 and LTO8 media with our Commvault environment.

Could you please advise if there is any recommended limit on the number of times these tapes should be reused? Also, are there any Commvault or HP best practices regarding tape media reuse, such as a recommended maximum number of write/overwrite cycles or media retirement criteria?

We would appreciate your guidance on the recommended approach to ensure media reliability and avoid any potential data integrity issues.

Tape media reuse is primarily governed by the manufacturer specifications, media health, and operational best practices.

In practice, the safest guidance is to manage reuse by health and error trends, not by a fixed number: use your tape/drive media integrity analysis and Commvault job stats to watch for rising soft errors, write/read retries, or verify failures, and retire any cartridge that starts trending that way (and keep your environment within the recommended temp/humidity ranges.

Regularly monitor tape health using library and drive diagnostics, including:

 -> Media error counts
 -> Read/write retries
 -> Permanent media errors
 -> Tape alerts and cleaning recommendations

Replace tapes that begin showing recurring media errors, excessive retries, or degraded performance, even if they have not reached the theoretical usage limit.

Follow a media rotation strategy and avoid continually reusing the same small subset of tapes.

Periodically perform test restores to verify media readability and data integrity.
