Hey,

I have some questions during preparation to migrate to the new MA.

Before all this change I Matainance MA or Disable it. Which will be better ?

I wanna replace OLD MA to new MA. So I use robocopy with /mirror and /copyall to copy DDB and Index( on the same place and disk letter).

Then I turn off OLD MA and on NEW MA change IP and name (the same that have OLD),

The next step is to install Commvault MA on NEW, and at the end of the installation, agree that there is a Client with the same name and replace it.

Do you think it should work?

And if something is wrong I have old Ma and can go back to him,

Hello @Zawro

Thank you for your message.

It’s generally recommended to disable the old MA before starting the migration.
This ensures that backup, restore, or auxiliary copy operations are stopped, but administrative tasks can still be carried out. If you put the MA into disable mode, it will stop the all operations, which is helpful during the transition.

I suggest two methods for migrating the MA:

1- Migrating to the New MA Using the Replace MediaAgent App This method automates much of the migration process. You can find more details and the steps in this guide:
https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/migrating_to_new_mediaagent_using_replace_mediaagent_app.html

2-Manual Migration build your new MA with a new hostname/client name, and add it in Commvault.
Migrate your data (such as storage and DDB) to the new MA.
Once the migration is complete, decommission the old Windows MA.

For assistance with moving the Deduplication Database (DDB), please refer to this guide:
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/12577_moving_deduplication_database_to_another_mediaagent.html

For moving a Mount Path, you can follow this link:
https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/9302_moving_mount_path.html

Regarding the Index by default, the index cache is located in the MA installation dir .
There is no need to copy the contents of the index cache manually, as the new MA can perform index restores directly from the media once the data is migrated.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Yes, but if something goes wrong with Move DDB, will I lose DDB? or is it only deleting from the source when it has been successfully migrated?

@Zawro, you are basically looking for a hardware refresh of MA.

Can you please take a look at the below doc link

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/mediaagent_hardware_refresh_overview.html

It follows the below steps

This process involves the following steps:

  1. Prerequisites

Set up and configure the new computer to be ready for the MediaAgent migration.

  2. Setting up the New MediaAgent

Install and configure a new MediaAgent.

  3. Migrating to the New MediaAgent

Migrate your old MediaAgent to the new MediaAgent.

  4. Post Migration Operations

Test the new MediaAgent and delete the old MediaAgent.

Also regarding concern for DDB move, DDB will be recoverable irrespective of DDB move status. DDB is not deleted till move completes.

hello @Zawro

Don't worry I've done this many times and it works. However, to be on the safe side, I recommend manually saving your DDB (this is a method I used in the past).

to do this

  • Open yourmedia agent and navigate to the DD partition.
  • You'll find the CVSIDB directory there. Copy all the contents of this directory to a shared folder or an out-of-place location where you can easily access it later.

This will ensure you have a copy in case anything goes wrong during your migration. If needed, you can restore the DDB files from the out-of-place location to the new DDB location. Then, from the console, choose MOVE DDB PARTITION  and select the option Change config only(as shown in the screenshot below).

Let me know if you run into any issues!
