Question

Unable to Restore Backups After Reinstalling and Renaming Client

Forum|alt.badge.img+5

Hi Commvault Community,

I’m having an issue restoring backups from a previously licensed machine. Here’s what happened:

  1. I removed the license from my client.

  2. Then I formatted the machine.

  3. I reinstalled the OS but assigned a different hostname.

  4. I installed the Commvault agent again.

  5. In the CommCell Console, the system now shows up as a new client, even though it's the same physical machine.

My goal is to restore data that was backed up before the format. However, I’m unable to access the previous backups from the new client.

As a workaround:

  • I created a virtual machine that replicates the original configuration of the machine before the license was removed — same hostname, OS version, install path, etc.

  • Still, I’m unable to access or restore the previous backup data, even from the VM.

I’ve attached a screenshot showing the backup history that was completed successfully before the changes.

I need assistance with:

  • Accessing previous backups from the old client.

  • Understanding if it's possible to associate the new client with the old backup history.

  • Alternatively, restoring the backups to another client.

Looking forward to your help.

Thank you in advance.

That screenshot isn’t showing any successful operations for that Client, so if they were the backups you were hoping to restore from, I suspect you’re out of luck.

Hi Erase,

Thank you for your reply.

To clarify — the backups I want to restore were completed before the machine was reformatted and the license was removed. The screenshot I shared was likely from the new client, which is why it doesn’t show the previous jobs.

What I need help with is:

  1. Accessing the previous backups from the original client (before the format).

  2. Understanding if it’s possible to associate the new client with the old client’s backup history.

  3. Alternatively, restoring those backups to another client, if the original one can’t be reused.
