UpdateIndex error (Oracle RAC)

Hello, hope this finds you all well!

A few days ago I configured backups for an Oracle RAC client and I’ve been noticing a very strange behavior… Every incremental backup gets switched to a full backup and there always this error being displayed: “UpdateIndex failed on MediaAgent [media agent name] - Index files are missing. Job could have earlier run on a different MediaAgent possibly due to a failover.
Source: media agent name, Process: UpdateIndex”
.

It is true that we have a pool of 4 media agents and it can use any of them but we don’t notice this error on any other of our hundreds of backups and they also jump media agents between jobs. A lot of them being other Oracle RACs…

What is even stranger is that this error happened even during its first full backup.

Could this be happening because this DB is a duplicate of one configured with other Storage Policy that uses other media agents? Even though they use different DDBs? Can it be that this is somehow creating some confusion?

Events from an incremental job

I’ve thought that maybe it was something happening on the DB itself but from what I gather the job gets turned to full even before it does anything on the Oracle side.

I’ve read other topics regarding this issue but none was too similar. Can anyone help understand what may be happening here?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Hi @NOS

Can we know CV version on CS, Index MA, RAC nodes?

When first failure occurred, did you notice communication errors between db nodes and index MA?

Hello,

Commserve is version 11.36.68 at the moment but when the issue happened it was on version 11.36.65. The media agents as well as the oracle hosts were/are on the same version. Just to make it clear, this database never ran without this issue.

I didn’t notice any communication errors. Most of our jobs use the same media agents and show no issue. It’s only this specific Oracle RAC database.

Thanks in advance for your help!

After opening a case to Commvault we realized the issue was related to the client not being upgraded to Index V2.

After running the workflow and upgrading it to Index V2 the problem was solved.

Thank you.
