Thanks for the great question! VM backups do not protect shared content with the VM. The process of the VM backup is to protect the VMDK’s attached to that server and shared data is not. We will protect the shared details like the fstab files and such but the content will not be protected.
If you do want a backup to follow shares you will need to use the OS backup agent ( be it windows or linux etc ) and configure it to follow those shares.
