Remote VM backups - can a remote proxy dedupe across the WAN?

Is this possible or any better ideas?

Problem: Remote office with a small VMware setup where CV agents on clients not permitted.  If agents could be installed it would be a simple case of client-side deduplication so they could be backed up remotely.

To get deduplication happening would it possible to use a VM-proxy at the remote site send backup data to the data center?

The idea would be:

Remote ESX → Remote Proxy …..can’t be deduped because no agent to do it

Remote Proxy → data center media agent ….deduped on the proxy

Restore will be obviously fully hydrated...they are prepared to live with.
