Hi, we have a VM attribute setup in Vcenter for the VM and this attribute last backup is modified with the date and time when the intellisnap snapshot is removed.

The attributes are backup status and last backup.  We would like to add another attribute in to record the date and time the intellisnap snapshot is created.  I assume we would have to setup the attribute in VI first or can we get Commvault to do this?

Thanks

Hi @crmljc ,

To add a new VM attribute in vCenter that records the date and time when the IntelliSnap snapshot is created, you will need to set up the attribute in VMware vCenter first. Commvault does not directly create VM attributes in vCenter; it can only modify them during backup operations if they are already defined.

Here are the steps to add a new attribute in vCenter and configure Commvault to modify it:

1. Add the new attribute in vCenter:
- Log into your vCenter server.
- Navigate to the VM, right-click and choose Custom Attributes.
- Add a new attribute for recording the snapshot creation time.

2. Configure Commvault to update the attribute:
- Ensure that the VSA (Virtual Server Agent) is configured to interact with VMware.
- Use a pre or post backup script within the backup job in Commvault to update this attribute. The script should use VMware PowerCLI commands to modify the attribute value to the current date and time when the snapshot is created.

For detailed guidance on scripting with Commvault and using VMware PowerCLI, refer to the following documentation:
- User Operations VM File Recovery Plugin for VMware
https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/32535_user_operations_vm_file_recovery_plugin_for_vmware.html
- VMware PowerCLI Documentation https://developer.vmware.com/docs/powercli/latest
