 Hello Commvault Community,

I am new to using Commvault at my company and still trying to understand many aspects of the software. Recently, I received an email titled "Maintenance Release Availability Notice" (see attached image). I would appreciate it if someone could help me understand what these types of emails entail and what hotfixes are.

As a beginner, I am not very familiar with the terminology and processes involved. From what I have gathered, maintenance releases seem to include updates and fixes, but I am not sure how they differ from regular updates. Additionally, I would like to know more about hotfixes and their importance in maintaining the software.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Best regards,

João Savioli

Hey @savioli

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.20/feature_release_updates.html

The release version is expressed as a combination of the platform release, the feature release, and the maintenance release. For example, a release version of 11.26.22 refers to Platform Release 11, Feature Release 26, and Maintenance Release 22.

  • A feature release (formerly "service pack") is a collection of new features, enhancements to existing features, and enhancements for product stabilization. Each feature release also contains a cumulative set of hotfixes that were released after the previous feature release version. Feature releases are available in a 90-day cycle. Every feature release undergoes full regression testing prior to release.

To keep your CommCell environment up to date, we recommend that you update the feature release every 1 to 2 years.

  • A maintenance release (formerly "hotfix pack") is a collection of hotfixes that are targeted at resolving specific critical issues that might cause major disruptions to operations or potential losses of data. A new maintenance release is available every month.

To keep your CommCell environment up to date, we recommend that you update the maintenance release every 2 to 3 months.

I would also recommend you do some training here: https://readiverse.commvault.com/learn/
