Does Commvault support NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics, including NVMe over TCP)

Arlie says:

Commvault does not support NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics, including NVMe over TCP) as a transport protocol for VMware VM backups. For VMFS datastores presented via NVMe-oF, you must use alternative, supported protocols for backup operations.

Documentation (SAN Transport for VMware

NVMe-oF SAN is supported with VDDK 8.0.3 and higher using Linux access node only.

I am a liitle bit confused now ….

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Arlie does make mistakes from time to time.
As per documentation, as long as VDDK 8.0.3 and later is used on a Linux access node then NVMe-oF SAN Datastores are supported. If you’re using a mixed access node environment, configure VM groups that are protecting NVMe-oF hosted VMs to use a Linux access node.

Hopefully this helps clarify.

Regards,
Jace

Hi @ThomasG

Thank you for flagging this. We’ve submitted feedback to the backend team to correct it.

When using Arlie, please try to frame your questions as specifically as possible to the requirement. For example, I added “VMware” to the query and received the correct response.

Qn: Does Commvault support NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics, including NVMe over TCP) for VMware?

ANS: Yes, Commvault supports datastores configured with NVMe-oF SAN (Storage Area Network) for VMware backups, but with specific requirements and limitations.

Key Points from Documentation

  • SAN transport mode is supported for datastores configured on Fibre Channel (FC), iSCSI, or NVMe-oF SAN.
  • NVMe-oF SAN is supported with VDDK 8.0.3 and higher using Linux access node only.
  • The Virtual Server Agent (VSA) proxy must be a physical server with SAN access to the datastore LUNs.
  • SAN transport mode is not supported for vSAN datastores.

Documentation Reference

"Datastores are configured on Fibre Channel (FC) or iSCSI SAN (Storage Area Network) or NVMe-oF SAN (Storage Area Network). Note: NVMe-oF SAN (Storage Area Network) is supported with VDDK 8.0.3 and higher using Linux access node only."
