As I understand the Intellisnap backup copy process: we have virtual proxy

  1. will mount the SS (storage snapshot) to ESX host (proxy ESX host) from the backup that had run
  2. will it register a temp vm
  3. if the proxy vm resides on the same proxy esx host; it will use hot-add wherein it will attach the vmdk on the storage snapshot in step a and read the data via the guest OS and push it to MediaAgent on the appropirate guest vm network
  4. however if the proxy VM is on a diffrent esx host; it will use nbd to copy the data and send data to MediaAgent

My question is if say that proxy is engaged in backup copying more than 1 vms which are on different datastores and someone runs the same Intellisnap backup a. will the intellisnap backup fail as there is a proxy VM which has disks across 2 different datastores.

hello @Rajeev Mehta

You didn’t mention the proxy OS, but for Windows, it should still be able to handle additional Intellisnap snap copy requests across different datastores as long as the allocated resources (CPU, memory, and I/O) are sufficient.

However, I encountered issues with Linux/Unix, so I recommend reading this article, which might be helpful:
