LAN FREE Backup

Forum|alt.badge.img+4

Hi Guys,

We have

  1. SpectraLogic Tape Library is zoned with the NetApp AF400 via the SAN Fabric switch
  2. NetApp can see the Tape drives over the SAN Fabric switch.
  3. VMware VM are on the NetApp.

In one environment

We have CIFS share on the NetApp which we would like to backup LAN-FREE to Spectralogic Tape library

We have VMWare VM which we would like to backup LAN FREE via the Intellisnap to Spectralogic Tape library

how do we achieve this?

If you want to do lan free backups from the the NetApp directly to tape connected to the NetApp, then your only option is NDMP. You can do that for CIFS but you cannot do that for VMware backups.

You can technically backup the volumes where the VMs reside but its not a consistent backup, and you can only restore the files that make up the VM or entire volume - it wont put it back into the vCenter inventory.

File System Data Protection

You can use the Commvault software to back up data on NetApp Ontap systems shared via the CIFS and NFS protocols, and via the NDMP protocol.

For information about how to protect CIFS shares, NFS exports, and NDMP content, see the following topics.

Thanks @Damian Andre .

Can we have

Spectralogic Tape Library connected to the NetApp for LAN-FREE backup

AND

the Same Spectralogic Tape library connected to the Media Agent Server for performing IntelliSnap VMware where the VM is located on the NetApp

Both will be configured in the same Media Agent

Yes I think that should be possible. Commvault will see the same libraries as separate, using remote NDMP for the NetApp controlled library and a standard tape library. If you could partition the library between both (i.e try not share drives) then it may help with resource contention but not sure if that is possible with what you have right now.
