Removing 1 VM from multiple VM backups

My question is this.  I have a single VM Backup subclient that backups up 5 VM’s.  One of the VM’s I would like to remove to lower my total backup overhead.  I can not delete the “Job” because there are other VM’s in it.  I just want the 1 VM removed from all backups and removed from the overhead of our license.

I understand that I can wait for the "data aging” to happen on the jobs but we hold them for over 1 year.  And these VMs make up almost 9TB which is why I would like to remove them without waiting.

Please feel free to ask any questions I would be happy to explain more.

Kind Regards,

Pauul

For the Licensing point of view,

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.25/essential/6972_usage_calculation_for_virtual_machines_only_license.html

Usage Decrease

Usage can decrease by removing existing virtual machines from the subclient content and by running full backup jobs or synthetic full backup jobs.

Excluded Data

The following types of data are excluded from the capacity calculation:

  • Subclients with disabled activity.

  • Subclients with no storage policy.

For being able to remove the VM from the backups, use the VM centric approach if your hypervisor support that:

https://documentation.commvault.com/11.25/essential/136035_should_i_transition_to_vm_centric_hypervisors.html

Reasons to Transition

You might want to consider transitioning soon if you are experiencing any of the following scenarios:

  • In your current environment, synthetic full jobs are slow.

  • You need to retain backups or aux copy backups for individual VMs.

  • You want to delete individual VMs from a backup job.
