Hi Team,

We have multiple VMware VMs running MySQL databases. We do not want to install any Commvault iDataAgent inside these VMs and plan to perform agentless VSA (VMware snapshot-based) backups for them.

Could you please confirm the following:

  1. Whether agentless VMware snapshot backups for these MySQL database VMs provide application-consistent (MySQL-consistent) backups ?

  2. In case of VM restore (either in-place or out-of-place), will the MySQL database be recoverable without any corruption or data inconsistency issues?

  3. Will the database be restored to a consistent point-in-time corresponding to the available recovery point of VM ?

We want to ensure that database consistency and integrity are maintained during backup and restore operations without deploying the MySQL iDataAgent.

Hi @Mohit Chordia ,

Good day!

→ With only file system and application consistent VSA backup we quiesce mechanism to pause the FS and application activity. through which we can only achieve file system consistency

→ You cannot guarantee that the restored database will be in a usable, consistent state without deploying the MySQL Agent

→ To ensure MySQL database consistency and integrity during backup and restore, you must install the MySQL Agent inside the VM and configure application-aware backups.
