The client requests a survey of VM growth from January to date to find out how many are being protected month by month, do we have some kind of report that provides this information on the growth of Virtual Machines?

Are you using 11.32 or later? If so, there is new Workload Usage Reporting available via the Web Console which may provide what you're after, but I suspect it will depend on your license model. Strangely I can't find this reporting in Command Center (11.32):
It is a bit of a clunky process:
- From the Web Console open the CommCell Dashboard
- From the Worldwide Dashboard, click Current Capacity Usage
- From the License summary - worldwide report, select Growth and Trends (top right)
- Within the Growth and Trends section, there are multiple tabs which show various usage details. Within my environment, I would browse to the Workload Usage by Clients tab, where I can find usage details relating to our VMware-based VM Clients within the Total Clients in Each Workload chart, for the past 6 moths. YRMV.
