Hi Guys!

I have a Schedule Policy for Virtual Server backups, what containes two incremental backups during the day (4:00, 14:30) and a Synthetic Full backup at the evening (18:00). Before Synthetic Full, "Run Incremental Backup" configured in the policy.
When the old V1 indexing VM backups was run, there were Incremental backups at 4:00, 14:30, 18:00 and Synthetic Full after the last Incremental. After V2 indexing VM subclient migration, the same Schedule Policy runs differently. There are the two configured Incremental and the Synthetic Full, but no Incremental before Synthetic Full. Why is it happens? Incremental can't run before Synthetic Full with V2 indexing as configured in the Schedule Policy?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @VBalazs,

I understand that after migrating the VM clients from V1 to V2, the Incremental job does not run before the Synthetic Full.

From the screenshot, it appears that the Incremental job ran before the Synthetic Full scheduled at 18:00 for the VSA subclient ‘BCPassthru_V1’. However, for the default subclient, there is no Incremental job before the Synthetic Full. Could you confirm whether backups were newly started for the default subclient and if incremental job still runs for the subclient ‘BCPassthru_V1’ at 18:00 before Synth Full?

Please note that the option "Run Incremental before Synthetic Full" is no longer available after V11 SP16. Existing schedules in Commvault prior to SP16 still have this option, but any schedules created after V11 SP16 will not include it. For more details, refer to this documentation: Adding Automatic Schedule for Synthetic Full Backup.

Here is the documentation on Synthetic Full Backups Documentation.

hello @VBalazs

VSA backup with V2 indexing enabled allow you to run incremental backups independently, even while a synthetic full backup is in progress.

You shouldn't have any problem with your scenario .

please follow these steps::

1-Configure an incremental backup schedule pattern on a backup set or subclient so that it runs at a specific time every day at 17:30.
https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/adding_automatic_schedule_for_incremental_backup.html

2- Configure a synthetic full backup schedule pattern on a backup set or subclient so that it runs at a specific time after the final incremental backup in Step 1, above, was run so it will be at 18:00
https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/expert/adding_automatic_schedule_for_synthetic_full_backup_to_backup_set_or_subclient.html

3- To ensure that the synthetic full backup job does not conflict with the final incremental backup job in Step 1, make sure to that jobs are set to be queued.

Hi @Dheeraj Shetty

In reply to your question, subclient ‘BCPassthru_V1‘ removed from Schedule policy, therefore only the new sublient from V2 pseudo client starts backup jobs.
Thanks for your information, the option "Run Incremental before Synthetic Full" is no longer available after V11 SP16. I missed it, but it's a bit confusing.
Because in the linked document, what deals with V11 SP32, there is the option "To run an incremental backup before the synthetic backup, select Before Synthetic Full." in the procedure part (https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/adding_automatic_schedule_for_synthetic_full_backup_to_backup_set_or_subclient.html). And if I try to create a new Schedule Policy in Commcell Console in our V11 SP28 environment, also available this function. It is available, but doesn't work.
But OK, I can live with it and use scheduled Synthetic.

Hi @Mohamed Ramadan

Thanks for your reply, that was a good idea. I have configured it and it works.
