Storage accelerator - who is using it and what are you experiences

If you are running on FR32 than you should see it in the job details. If not than the only way to asses it is to go through the logs. It mention it somewhere throughout the run in the CVD.log. It is such a miss that you really miss a good eye on it how it works. I already requested a change to be implemented in Command Center on the level of the client/object that you would see the connection status towards the cloud storage backend in case the plan uses cloud storage and SA is enabled and enrolled.

You can check the CVD.log and or the events sections within the CommCell console (and most likely also within Command Center) where it will report if the client is unable to talk directly to the given cloud library.

Ok. Not sure if you looked into using FREL, but we use it for a long time already and the nice thing is that you can deploy them directly from Command Center.

NTP config for FREL from the commvault client

Any idea what the status is of CMR 318001? We also openend a CMR, if I recall correctly, to have the ability to specify the NTP servers and timezone information being added during the deployment of the FREL, so it is slipstreamed into the appliance during the installation phase. It doesn't make sense that you have to do this after installation manually. In our case we run 30+ FREL appliances, so without proper automation this is lengthy job if you like the time formatting within your logs to be aligned with the rest of your environment.

Question on Command center vs CommCell Console

I also urge everyone to use Command Center even though I also need/move back to the CommCell console and the reason for it is that otherwise people will not get used to it and the change will be bigger. One of the reason I move back personally is the lack of oversight in Command Center. You just have to click around way too much to get a good decent picture on how things are running. What I in all honesty miss is information gathering from product management in relation to the usability of Command Center from both a UX experience and a feature perspective. I speak a lot to people within Commvault, but do not see a lot of activity here. Curious to hear what other think of Command Center like it is right now based on FR32. Reason why I in particular refer to FR32 is because it is continuously being refactored, so running the latest version gives a different perspective than running an older version like FR28.

Upgrading existing FREL appliances to FR32 might fail in case FREL appliance cannot access public Internet

We have the same requirement e.g. FREL appliances are not allowed to go directly to the public Internet. I however would prefer Commvault to deliver a highly secured OVA template and make sure it is kept up-to-date by releasing a one-button redeploy method of the entire appliances instead of OS update alone. This was added now in FR32, but this leaves the FREL on the same distro version and doesn't make sure other improvements are slipped into FREL appliances who are deployed already. So, at a certain point in time it is advised to re-deploy the FREL entirely.For example I now ran into an issue in where existing FRELs are all broken after the upgrade attempt. Only fix now is to re-deploy all of them and that is a labor intensive job in case you haven't automated yourself. Our production environment uses more than 30 FREL appliances.

Linux OS patches for FREL

I would prefer monthly or bi-monthly refreshes of the OVA template to be released on a repository that can be pulled it automatically or manually. This way Commvault can fully grant and preserve the security and stability of the FREL OVA appliance. I think in the end if customers would embrace this that it would really benefit the overall user experience for each and every customer.

Linux OS patches for FREL

I though it was added to FR30 and the documentation/releases notes also mention it, but only as of FR32 there is real documentation see: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/essential/156304_updating_os_for_linux_frel_clients.htmlI just created a topic on the community as I opted back in the past to instead of introducing a OS update function to introduce an automated FREL appliances refresh option that basically redeploys a FREL with a newer version while preserving the current configuration using a one-button approach. This makes the appliances remain a standardized and secured appliance. See also:

@Gnaget1891 can you reproduce it easily? Would it be possible to revert the Windows updates or reprovision a brand new acces node without the latest updates? Any other update that has been done like AV ?

Interesting approach to upgrade your underlying platform and not taking into account the stuff that has to integrate with it. Only workaround now is to or upgrade to FR32 or indeed create a dummy setup that contains a supported hypervisor. I would advice you to go to FR32 and spend time on that instead of spending time on a workaround while in the end you have to upgrade to FR32 anyhow.

Going from platform release .28 to release .30

Personally I would move directly to FR32 and skip FR30. Our experience in terms of stability with FR30 were not that great and a lot as slipstreamed already in FR32. In addition FR32 is a LTS release, so it is undergoing more regression testing in comparison to a non-LTS release. Not sure of course how big or special your environment is in comparison to ours which is a MSP setup.
