Hi all.

How would the procedure be, to do a Linux OS refresh from Rocky Linux to RHEL? The servers have local OS, ddb and index disks, and the MA’s have block storage mounted disks for the library.

The hardware need to be reused, so I just want to reinstall OS, but keep DDB, index, library data, server name and IP, so that the server can continue operations after the Linux OS refresh..

Any suggestions on how to do this and any recommendations appreciated.

Regards

There is some instructions here: https://documentation.commvault.com/11.42/commcell-console/mediaagent_hardware_refresh_overview.html

But it is pretty simple - you will need to ensure you retain the DDB and index. Theoretically those can be recovered from backup but will prolong getting back up and running.

Reinstall the OS, keep the same hostname (crucially), and IP, reinstall the MA software using the same client name, put the data back where it belongs (preferably back in its original path) and it should be good to go. All the major configuration is stored in the control plane database, which really makes redeployment easier.

We’re looking to go to Rocky, what’s your reason for going to RHEL?

Hi dgzagm4q4cv.

We initially installed the Rocky Linux because of the same reason as you are seeing; Commvault is using Rocky Linux for HyperScaleX and other installations.

But, the support is limited, as its a community driven OS. There are at the moment two companies that have some kind of commercial support you can subscribe to and pay for.

And then there is the issue that Rocky only release security updates for the current supported minor version and not backwards

At the moment, for Rocky version 9.x, Commvault only lists version 9.6 as supported, but Rocky only release security updates for 9.7 as its the latest version. So if you upgrade to 9.7 for security reasons on your CommServe and MediaAgents, and you run into an issue with Commvault, because of version 9.7, you can’t be sure that you will get help from Commvault as 9.7 is not supported yet. The 9.7 is not validated yet by Commvault. This will always be an issue, next time Rocky goes to 9.8, the 9.7 is obsolete and it will take Commvault maybe half a year to validate 9.8 and make it a supported version.

The Release policy for Rocky Linux:
Rocky Linux does not support point releases once a newer one is available. Once a new minor point release is available, the older one is immediately considered end of life and users must upgrade to continue receiving security updates. For example, once 9.8 gets a general release, 9.7 is immediately end of life. Source

There is another forum post about this issue:

https://community.commvault.com/self-hosted-q-a-2/support-for-commvault-11-40-on-rocky-linux-9-7-or-9-x-in-general-11454

I would really love to go with Rocky Linux, but I’m almost sure my audit team would come after me, for running Commvault on a Linux distribution that do not get security updates. This is because I have to stay on the older Rocky version which Commvault currently only supports.

Regards

-Anders

CIQ appears to be similar to RHEL with LTS support.  They maintain security patches for 9.6 even when 9.7 comes out.
