Hi all,

I would like to know what are some advice/recommendations you can provide with regards to CommCell migration.

Im in the initial planning stage of migrating my existing CommCell and merge it with an existing one.  Any gotchas, limitations and expected
issues when migrating.  Is there any rule of thumb when it comes to timeline ( how long does it take to migrate clients across, storage policies )

Is there a chance that the migration would fail and if it does what are the consequences?

Any advice would be appreciated.

hello @LiliDale

Regarding your inquiry, I recommend reading the Commvault documentation on CommCell Migration Operations:https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/use_cases_and_operations_for_commcell_migration.html

For information on limitations and expectations, you can find details on what migrates and what does not here:https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/migration_considerations_for_commcell_migration.html

As for potential issues during migration, if you follow the requirements and prerequisites, you should encounter minimal problems. However, for safety, I recommend taking a DR backup and a snapshot of the CS VM before you start.

The timeline for migration will depend on the size of your CommCell.

In migration, there are three main steps:

  1. Export the metadata from the source CommCell (old one).
  2. Import the metadata to the destination CommCell (new one).
  3. Register the client computers to the new CommCell.

You shouldn’t have any issues with the first two steps, but the third step can be a bit tricky.

I'm happy to assist you if you encounter any challenges!
