We install a small Commcell test lab (1 Commvault server, 1 MA and 1 client) with DR backups and aux copy to Metallic recovery reserve (MRR). My plan is to test a full site crash.

Since I have a DDB backup and data copy in MRR, I should be able to reinstall a Commcell using latest DDB backups and resync data.

There’s a few steps I’m not really sure about. here’s what I have so far:

  1. reinstall CV serveur using DDB backup set downloaded from cloud.commvault.com
  2. Apply licence
  3. reinstall MA
  4. add MRR storage

Now, how should I proceed with the data in MRR. My MA is empty. How do I sync back from MRR?

Unless I’m not understanding, here’s what it should look like:

  1. Reinstall CV using DR backup
  2. Not necessary -- license is stored in the CSDB
  3. Reinstall MA
  4. Not necessary -- config is already in the CSDB

Good Day,

Thank you for your post.

I believe you mean to say your DR backup rather than your DDB backup.

The steps would be as follows:

  1. Reinstall the Commserve binaries using the DR backup to recreate all the previous configured entities.
  2. Apply License
  3. Rebuilt the MA with the same IP, host name and drive letters as before the “crash”. As you have already restored from the DR backup the MRR configuration will be pushed to the MA and come online
  4. You will be able to restore from any backup stored in MRR with no further configuration required.
  5. If you would like to copy the data back from your MRR to local disk you would need to escalate the case to our support team with your CSDB and logs, we would then be able to provide you with an auth code and a script to set your MRR copy to be primary (precedence 1) and local disk to be your secondary copy (precedence 2).

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/changing_precedence_of_copy_for_storage_policy.html

  1. You can then run the secondary copy to have a copy back on disk.
  2. Once complete you would change the MRR copy precedence back to 2 and the local disk copy back to 1.

Hi. Thanks for the details. A few points I would like to clarify. What do you mean by previous configured entities? My current setup has: The CV server, a 3 nodes Hyperscale cluster (main MA and also MA for MRR) plus another MA for a 3rd copy a separate SAN. Tks.

Hello,

I mean to say that all the configured devices at the time of the DR backup (for example Media Agents, Clients, Storage Pools) will all show in the restore Commserve Console and Commvault Command Centre.

If you will be deleting the data on the primary storage as it would be lost in a disaster then you would also need to seal the associated DDB to stop new jobs referencing the data.

https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/sealing_deduplication_database.html

A new DDB would be created once you run a client backup.

Regards,
