Hi,

We will migrate a tape library from one commcell to an another existing one. But we want to know if it’s possible to keep the data already existing on the tapes and to restore data from the tape through the new commcell?

Hi @nhaing,

Thank you for your question.  While it is possible to restore data from tapes that were written from a foreign Commcell there are some steps that will need to be taken first.

In order for data to be restored, the “destination” Commcell requires metadata to be exported from the “source” Commcell (the Commcell that originally wrote data to that tape).  We have a process to do that known as ‘Commcell Migration’.

Essentially, there is a Commcell Migration Export operation that will need to be executed on the Commcell that originally wrote to that tape.  That will create a folder containing database dumps and XML files that will then need to be imported into the Destination Commcell via a Commcell Migration Import operation.

This process will import the required metadata into your new Commcell to enable you to restore data from those tapes.  This can be a bit of a tricky process, so I recommend carefully reading the documentation:

CommCell Migration Overview (commvault.com)

There are a lot of requirements that are noted to make sure you are in a Support configuration between Source and Destination Commserves before you get started:

Requirements for CommCell Migration (commvault.com)

Please pay close attention to the Commvault and SQL Version requirements, otherwise the resulting Import operations will fail.
