Hello Experts,

We are in the process of replacing the Storage of primary backups and would like to take expert opinion before proceeding further.

Our storage policy have StoreOnce as a primary copy (retention 30 days) and Tape library (retention 10 years) for the secondary copy. Going forward we want to replace the StoreOnce with Hyperscale-X for primary copy. The data on StoreOnce is copied to tape and we want to leave the StoreOnce for next 30 days to allow the data to expire.

Now the questions are

  • If we modify the storage policy and replace the StoreOnce with HSX, will we be able to restore the data on StoreOnce in next 30 days if required?
  • If we create a new storage policy, how can we move the catalog of Tape from old policy to new policy?
  • What is the best approach for this ?

Appreciate your suggestions on this

I’d say the best approach would be;

  • Create a new Sync Aux Copy on your current Storage Policy with Storage Target the new HSX
  • Promote this copy to Primary so you start running your new backups to this one
  • Keep your current StoreOnce as a disabled AuxCopy, so no new jobs are copied to it, with the new retention you want to set

Once the StoreOnce is empty and all jobs are aged, you can proceed to fully decommission it from the environment.

Regards,

Javier

Hi @raj5725

You may also refer below document to prompt aux copy to primary copy.

Hi @raj5725

The way to do it is to create an additional copy as synchronous type.

Few things to consider

  • You can promote the copy immediately and start your new backup jobs to the new copy. This approach however will result in few jobs which might not have been copied yet on tape copy.
  • The StoreOnce copy can be disabled though so that new jobs are not copied to that copy.
  • Other approach is to copy all existing jobs to the new copy and once the catch up has happened then promote the HSX copy to primary.
