This is the third installment in our series of articles on the latest capabilities of HyperScale X. Catch up on the first two here: what’s new in HyperScale X in 2022E and the redesign and innovation of the HSX installer.Today we are going to cover a few of key security features for HyperScale X, and how it provides a secure, immutable storage platform for protecting your business’s critical data. HyperScale X as Immutable Storage With the rising prevalence of ransomware, bad actors and new exploits, an immutable storage solution is a key facet in any data protection strategy. Having fast, reliable access to stored backup data can mean the difference between a quick, uneventful recovery of services, or a major impact on your business operations and revenue. HyperScale X takes a multi-tiered approach to immutability, layering controls at each level in the software stack. It starts at the policy layer within the Commvault Data Protection software. Commvault Feature Release 11.28, currently in Tech Preview and set for General Availability in August 2022, will now be referred to as Commvault Platform Release 2022E. Like most software companies, Commvault regularly provides software updates in order to bring new features and functionality to our customers. We had originally referred to these as “Service Packs”, using a numbering scheme that identified both the software version and the update version. For example, software Version 11 (first offered in 2015), Service Pack 18. Because this is premises-based software – requiring the customer to download, update, and maintain it themselves – customers elect to update their software with varying frequency, depending on their business cycles and internal IT resources. To help this process, we would intermittently designate one as having Long-term Support (LTS). Long-term Support is a product lifecycle management policy in which a stable release of computer software is maintained for a lon

The latest release of Commvault HyperScale X 2022E brings continued focus and improvement on the day-to-day operational aspects of the product. Arguably, customers spend a majority of their time simply operating, upgrading, and ensuring the health of their data protection environments. While initial installation is important, the maintenance and monitoring aspects of the product are key to enable the business operations to continue with little or no impact. After HyperScale X has been installed and secured, much of the ongoing efforts will be making sure that the software is kept up to date, and that any failures are rapidly detected, remediated, and brought back to service in a timely manner. Click on the images (figures) throughout to enlarge them. We've come a long way since someone typed "./setupsds" for the first time to launch the text based installer to configure Hyperscale, with a few twists and turns along the way. From the first manual drive selection and network configuration, Hyperscale setup and configuration was primarily CLI driven, requiring higher levels of Linux expertise than we wanted our customers, PS, and the field to worry about. As part of our effort to automate bring more simplicity, we are incredibly happy to bring to the product a completely re-designed HSX installer. Driven entirely through the IPMI interface, it's 100% GUI driven using a single command. No network config is required other than IPMI before beginning setup, greatly simplifying the effort and time requi
