Hi, Just want to ask if there are specific use cases or features that Hyperscale X can provide without Commvault Backup and Recovery or Disaster Recovery software? Or would I need CV backup and recovery to enjoy the features of the Hyperscale X reference architecture (i.e. would I have backup and recovery capabilities using the hyperscale X reference architecture on my servers alone without the CV Backup and Recovery license)
Hi! Just want to ask how the reference architecture for hyperscale X would be licensed. After acquiring a per node license, do we still need to purchase Backup and Recovery or Disaster Recovery licenses to enjoy backup and DR? Would appreciate any input on this. Thank you!
2 related questions -If a drive dies on one of the nodes in my RA setup, and that capacity drive is no longer available but a larger one is, can I replace the drive with the larger capacity one and the system operate with perhaps using a fraction of the capacity? e.g. a 8TB drive dies, could I replace it with a 12TB drive (& perhaps the system just use 8TB of that space)? I want to add an additional node, but the new nodes are only available with larger capacity drives. Can I do that, and if Yes then will it use a subset of the capacity so the usable is the same as the existing nodes? Thanks.
Hello all!I would like to get insights on what should be our best deployment scenario.Consider a 3 node HSX RA where each node has 2 FC ports (2 physical ports).Consider a FC SANConsider a FC storage system (providing VMware datastores)Consider a FC Tape Library Scenario 1Each node connected to the FC SAN via the two physical ports and zoned via one port to the FC storage and the other port to the Tape LibrarySo, each node has one path to tape library and one path to storage. This way every node (which is an MA) can write backups to tape AND also run VSA SAN transport mode backups from ESXi hosts Scenario 2One or two nodes connected to the FC SAN and zoned via the two FC ports to FC StorageThe remainder node(s) connected to the FC SAN and zoned via the two FC ports to Tape LibrarySo, each node has two ports, either to Storage or Tape. This way I get path failover to storage and tape. But each node gets specialized in writing tape backups OR backing up VMware via SAN transport mode. Doe
Both updated iso’s from commvault store for hyperscale x deploy do not have the intellesnap package preinstalled. Was this on purpose? I mean obviously it can be installed. - just seems like something that would be there. Just curious.
Hello all, I'd like to understand the steps taken by Commvault when a VSA backup from a vSphere environment uses a HSX block as access nodes/proxy. Consider that vSphere datastores are FC SAN based LUNs. So, best performance would be to use SAN transport mode on the cvlt side. During the backup operation, how the datastore LUNs are presented to the appliance? I saw in the docs the following: "For Linux proxies, you might need to rescan the SCSI or iSCSI bus after attaching devices. For MediaAgents on the HyperScale 1.5 Appliance or HyperScale X Appliance, you can use the rescan-scsi-bus.sh script to force a rescan." So, that rescan procedure, when it is required? Everytime a new datastore is presented to the virtual environment? If there's no new datastore, it is done only once during HSX deployment? Regards,Pedro
Hello, We're going to soon deploy a HyperScale X Reference Architecture with 3 nodes. I would like to know, since I didn't find anywhere else, if HSX can be the proxy/access host for my VSA based backups. Can each node be a proxy? Can it perform the File Recovery Enabler (Linux VM file restore) role? Can it perform Windows VMs file recovery? My virtual environment is VMware vSphere 7. Kind regards,Pedro Rocha
Hi , I have a customer that is exploring if a single HSX cluster can be managed by via 2 different commserve. His second commcell is for a small robo environment . Due to budget issues, he does not has the capital to start a new HSX cluster, hence he is thinking of leveraging an existing HSX cluster that is already tied to commcell A. Wonder if this is possible?
Hi, Will we see support for 20TB drives in Hyperscale X N24 Reference Architecture anytime soon. They are available for HPE A4200 servers but not in the CV support list. Also, will the HPE A4200 Gen10 Plus be available as a Reference Architecture server….maybe with 20TB drives. Regards,Patrik
We seem to run into multiple problems in our new HSX environment. Metadata disk d2 silently filled 100% on one of three nodes, data disks are all 90-95%, but in GUI only 550 of 720TB are shown as used. Not a single alert for this, all green in GUI. An then there is disk d22 / sdv on one node that failed a few weeks ago and was replaced together with support. In GUI it’s shown as mounted but in reality its not. sdu 65:64 0 16.4T 0 disk /hedvig/d21sdv 65:80 0 16.4T 0 disksdw 65:96 0 16.4T 0 disk /hedvig/d23 I followed Replacing Disks in an HyperScale X Reference Architecture Node (commvault.com) but the disk is not mounted. Nov 9 11:22:38 sdes1701-dp systemd: Dependency failed for /hedvig/d22. Nov 9 11:22:38 sdes1701-dp systemd: Job hedvig-d22.mount/start failed with result 'dependency'. Hello,Does anyone know a way to automate the shutdown procedure of an Hyperscale X cluster, maybe with a script? From the documentation there are some commands to perform, and we would need something that can be started without human input, and that can be scheduled in crontab.https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/132928_stopping_and_starting_hyperscale_x_reference_architecture_cluster.html Another useful thing would be a check command after the reboot to understand if everything was stopped “as expected” and that we are in a “clean” situation. ThanksLucio
So this is deployment 3 of 3 this week. And the first two have gone flawless. Pointed out some notes and documentation errors to the Commvault staff as well. However, this 3rd one is giving me grief. I am receiving a Failed to validate cluster please check the cvmanager.log for details.Ok, So - Note that all three nodes are green with Checks for status. So those are fineThe logs - this is where it gets weird. I have checked all three nodes /opt/commvault/logs/cvmanager.log - is blank. Theres nothing is there. I even tried to tailf the log file during the install and it just sits . So there is nothign being written to the logs. Now what? Well i burned like 4 hours trying to solve this so i just blew them away- reimaged all 3 nodes and started over. Here I am- Same things with fresh installs. I checked NTP and date/time is all gtg as well. What else should I be checking? Network is all working- I can hit all IP’s and ssh , iscsi etc is GTG. Ready? Go!
Hi i have an important opportunity that requires hyperscale X or commvault to support veritas OST. From veritas matrix , HSX and commvault is not under their supported vendor.Just to check is it valid from our end that it is not supported else is there any work around ?Below is a description of what OST does, seems like native capability of net backup integrate with third party storage solution." The OpenStorage Technology (OST) technology uses a plug-in architecture, similar to a software driver, that lets the third-party vendors direct the NetBackup data streams and metadata into their devices. The plug-in is developed and created by the OST partner and it resides on the media server for use by NetBackup"
We have the requirement in our company that all Mgmt interfaces/IP’s must be protected by a firewall. For HSX this includes the IP where sshd, http Admin GUI is running. But this seems not to be possible in our setup. We can not protect the DP network with firewall as there will also be backup traffic. So we decided to used 2 different VLAN’s on one of the two LACP channels.Overall we have 3 VLANs/networks configured on 2 LACP channels. 2 VLANs are configured on a trunk.Storage-Pool: not routed - no problem - on LACP 1 with 2 x 25G Data-Protection: should be used for communication with other Commvault servers and clients to back up - on LACP 2 with 2 x 25G Mgmt: used for sshd / http - on LACP 2 with 2 x 25G But according to documentation for Reference Architecture only one network can be routable. In our case both Mgmt and DP must be routable. I added some Linux policy routing rules and they worked perfectly fine until the GUI installer was started (via browser after basic network confi
Customer having monitoring tool called Zabbix and using the same for Alerts and Monitoring on all their IT devices. So they want to include commvault Infra servers (CS, MA) and Hyperscale X in Zabbix monitoring and Zabbix agent needs to be installed on local system for the same.Is Zabbix agent can be installed on HyperScale nodes? Is there any document available from Commvault end for the same?
Hi,I’m trying to setup my first HS-X node on an HPE Apollo 4200 server. The server has 2 SSDs for OS, I created a hardware RAID 1 with them. 2 SSDs for metadata and 24 Disks for data. I downloaded HS-X media ISO 2.2 from 2021-08 (seems to be the latest one)First, I’m not able to use “Multi Node” Option in first install screen, I guess that is because networking is not configured yet.I then go through the config, select all the disks depending on their purpose and start the installation. After reaching 100% it shows that installation failed and “cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device”. I see that esp, boot and lvm partition were created on /dev/sdc (RAID 1), I also see that lvm logical disks were created on sdc and OS was installed. If I reboot the installer ISO it tells me that an existing HS-X installation is detected. But when I try to boot from the OS RAID 1 device, it does not boot. So I guess that the grub bootmanger was not installed correctly and t
Hi EveryoneOne of my customers is looking for a way to monitor the hardware of an Hyperscale X by SNMP. I looked for the documentation in manufacturer's web and also in the community without success. Could someone help me to find the documentation, or tell me how and what can be monitored by SNMP?Thank you in advance
HiI have been search Commvault documentation and I could not fine an answer on my question, that´s why I am asking here. I want to create an Intellisnap of an ibm db2 database running on an AIX server. After the Intellisnap has been done, I want to move an backup of the Intellisnap to an hyperscale X device. So the backup data is not in the storage array. Would it be possible to mount the Intellisnap directly on the hyperscale X device to sent the backup data from the Intellisnap to the same hyperscale X device? Thanks in advance!
Hi Everyone,One of the customer is looking for temperature monitoring data for their available Hyperscale hardware where it can give min max average, trend etc. I looked for available alerts from cv but couldn't find as such.. From below link it just give Operating ambient and non-operating temperature of hyperscale devices.. What if the temp spikes for some reason, how these can be converted to alert in monitoring perspective from Commvault (NOT Irmc or ilo).. Could someone please advise..The hardware is HPE device.. https://documentation.commvault.com/hitachivantara/v11/essential/127672_hyperscale_x_appliance_models_technical_specifications.html
We installed a HyperScale X reference architectur. The host name of the server was in front of the installation “server2”, after installing HSX the hostname is like to the product serial number. Why was the host name changed? Can we change back to the formerly host name?RegardsThomas
Hi everyone,We are looking to refresh our primary storage, moving on from a Nimble SF100. As I start to evaluate the two I was hoping I might gain some insight here. Looking for best all around performance with emphasis on restore. Anyone have anything to say good or bad about either? Anyone evaluated a comparison of the two? Our frontend storage is a Pure Flash array. The Flashblade doesn't offer fiber channel, which is what we use for connectivity today. Our Oracle DBA is taking about issues backing up the larger DBs. I see there is a white paper for rapid backup and restore with Pure FA frontend, Pure FlashBlade backup library and intillesnap. We might have to explore that as her consultants are saying commvault can’t pull off the protection much longer as the dbs grow. They are currently just using the client side agent for backup. Thanks for your time!
Hi All,Two years before we implemented the Commvault HyperScale 1.5 Refernce Architecture on top of HPE 4200 Hardware. Our CS running on VM with 11.19 and MA configured in HyperScale 6 Node with RHEL 7.7 I am planing to upgrade the OS and CV version. When I browse the documentation page, I came across one more product terminaloy HyperScale X.I couldn’t figureout following factors, and looking a advice who is working in similar setup. What is techinical difference between Hyperscale refernce architecture X and 1.5? Any use cases where I need a situation to move from 1.5 to X? Can I upgrade HyperScale 1.5 to X in the same Hardware without distrub data? Can you upgrade the OS and CV version in the same 1.5 without jumping into X ?Your assistance would be appriciated. Thanks,Mani
Hello CV-Community,I have started a Hana DB restore from a HyperScale X Appliance and received an average throughput of ~100GB/hr. The Job was successful and in the events, there were no errors. However, I was wondering if this throughput is normal for an HSX 4-Node System. So I have started another restore test to a different physical destination server and received the same average throughput of ~100GB/hr. All systems are redundantly connected with 10G Network. Also, the Health status of the HSX is good. I looked on the internet but I could not find a documented Benchmark of the HSX.Does anyone know if this performance is "good" or normal for this appliance? For comparison: Backup performance of the same HSX is more then 10x higher and has over 1000GB/hr for the same clients tested for the restore.Regards, Kevin
Hi,Need to reboot a node, what I need to do before rebooting the server, witch command I have to execute before ?Thanks.
Hi, i need to access CommServe after Installing. But in that case i need PW and user for connection through RDP to Windows System. Bye Fizelsche
