We have both Azure and Hyper-V VMs.  The majority are backed up by the VSA agent in the Hypervisor, and have no installed agents.  However some have Windows File System, SQL Agent or Virtual Server agents installed.For all those last, if I look at the client Properties there is a row that shows:Client PropertiesFor any VM with no agents, that row just is not there.  I never found a VM where it says ‘Virtual’.  I should say that for a real physical server (which of course has to have an agent) it looks just like the above also.What worries me most about this is that this may consume Operating Instance licences.  We have Commvault Complete and I can see we are using all our OI licences but a fraction of our Virtual OI licences.  But for example when we added a SQL*Server Availability Group across a pair of virtual SQL*Servers, we had to find an OI licence for it.Is there are report that goes per-client and tells us exactly what licences it is relying on?  Is it right that our VMs show as

What’s the best practices for determining the number of proxies needed for both ESX and AHV?  Is it as simple as adding one proxy per ESX host or VCenter cluster?  Or is it more about adding proxies based on the protected FET?  I’m trying to develop a scale-out strategy so that we can easily predict what our proxy count will need to be as the environment grows, but I’m having difficulty finding a general rule for this.

Installing HyperScale (HS) with Secondary CS. My primary Index and DB located on separate drive letter (Ex: D:\  & E:\), but sec. CS on HS built with only C drive . CS LiveSync recommends that index & db location on pri and sec must be same. So how I can get an additional drives on sec. CS vm hosted on HS?

So in an effort to clean up our environment, we are trying to get our sla pushed to %97 and above. One of the issues is the clients that are part of the Exchange dag have no scheduled backups. My concern is that if I start backing up these clients, that they would be backing up the dags which is being backed up by our exchange backups that we are doing. Is the software smart enough to notice that the exchange client is part of an exchange cluster, and will not backup the dags which the exchange job is doing, or would i be double backing up dags if i started backing up the nodes as well?

Wondered if can anyone tell me if a “file system and application consistent” VM backup of a SQL server where the SQL VSS Writer is enabled utilises the “copy only” backup method so as to not affect any currently configured backup chains?Thanks

Hi, there is such a question, when I use Restore for Guest Files an Folders for Windows Server 2016 client using VSA for VMware, the content is displayed sometimes after 1 minute and sometimes after 1 hour. Why are these times not always the same.

Has anyone who has recently upgraded to MR34 (11.21.34) and using Application Aware VM backups having issues with the VSAAppAwareBackupWorkflow job Failing at “update app aware status for VM2” task? Error messages showing  “com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition.Source: , Process: Workflow”If you are also facing this issue have you any workaround/temporary fix?

Hi all,Is it possible to create a role that allows you to browse in a vmware subclient only of a single resource pool?When the user browses the subclient's content he must not see any other resources. I also tried to configure a role with "Change Content" disabled, but the user is still able to change the content.

Hi. In a VMware environment, I have VSA on virtual machine. Running HotAdd backup, if the VM backing up is on the same host of VSA, the final “remove snapshot” is very fast (few seconds). If the VM backing up is on a different host of VSA, the final “remove snapshot” is very slow (some minutes) and in the meanwhile the VM is unresponsive.Someone can explain to me why this happens?Thanks

From time to time there are those that have backups for clients that were once protected by pre-V11 agents that have since been unlicensed and protected by classic v1 indexed VM backups. There are odd occasions when this Known Issues for VMware VM-Centric Operations (commvault.com) gets me tripped up when I want to move to VM Centric, but it becomes a show stopper because of the number of agents that would have to be rolled out and then release the license on each one. I’d love to know if there is a way around it, like doing an offline client update; or where possible, batch rename the hostname of the pre-V11 clients so a new virtual client object is created?

I have a question regarding the File Indexing for Advanced reporting and search in Command Center. It’s not 100% clear for me after reading docs online.Let’s assume I enable indexing on one VM group. I understand that the MA associated with the storage policy used to backup this VM group will automatically have some roles installed and become index server.Now let’s assume I enable indexing on a different VM group where I use a different MA for backup. What will be the behaviour:Will a second, separate index instance be created? I will have two separate MA index servers and two separate indexes? Will I have a second indexing “node”, but the index will be shared between MA1 and MA2?

Hi all,We have a customer who needs to restore a large VM (multiple disk and TB’s).This job runs for days and than ends with Failure Reason: Unable to modify the VMX file for restore of virtual machine [vm-name]. Attempt start error: [The parameter is incorrect., Port passed is not valid. [0/0]. (W32.87)] We did not find out why, but customer would like to see that the disks restored are not automatically deleted. Is there a way in Commvault?Does the additional setting SkipDeleteVm also apply on “regular” VM restore or only on Virtualize Me?And would an Service account with no delete be an outcome or does this have to many side effects?Already my thank in advance. Danny

Hi,Last week, I restored a full VM whose IP is DHCP assigned, but fount out that, after the restore, its MAC address was changed.According to support, it’s normal because the MAC address is assigned by VMware, so, unless the original VM was deleted prior to the restore, VMware would always assign a different MAC address to the restored VM.The issue is, users who ask for a VM restore don’t usually want to delete the original one prior to the restore, not until they check the restored one to see if it works…Strange thing to me is that, in Netbackup, when I do a full VM restore, the MAC address is not changed, regardless the original one is present or not… So, I just wonder if there is a hidden switch somewhere in the restore setting that does the trick ? Or it is indeed the case that Commvault works differently to Netbackup in this scenario ? Thanks,Kelvin 

Checking my license abilities - i see where i have plenty of Virtual licenses. however when adding a vmware client I am getting this message after I authenticate. I do have an open ticket with MA , but also wanted to check here to see if anyone else has had this issue. 

HiI plan to migrate my commcell running on a standalone server 2012 to vmware.my plan is to : 1: Do a DR copy (in case of utter failure)2: shutdown all commvault services and sql + set services to not auto start.3: do the p2v migration, and shutdown physical machine.4: boot up virtualized commcell, and set up ip to match original machine.5: start commvault services (set to autostart)that should work right?my concerns are these : Performance. is there a tool to or something to help determine if the server can be virtualized without it taking to big of a performance hit ? fall back, if performance is determined to be to bad after some time, is the correct way to fall back to do a dr copy from the virtualized commcell, shut that instance down, and recover the dr copy to the original machine ?  

Can a VMWARE VM be restored retaining its original UUID?

Hello,Hypervisor is VMWare 6.7VMs are windows server 2019Media Agent is a linux one, with VSA installed. Full VM backup/restore are easily performed.But for granular restore (live browse) from the VSA backup of a VM, a Windows VM is required. It have difficulties to find documentation (or best practices) regarding the deployment/configuration of this VM. Simple questions, like which packages to deploy on it… Surely MediaAgent, but only this one?. A lot of documentation exists when the MediaAgent is running Windows and the VM is linux, as the FREL is available to download, or even how to install a MediaAgent over a linux VM and convert it to FREL. But when the OSes are reversed, I’m lost. Has anyone information to share (at least to me ) ?

Hello, We want to enable self user restores in our company. We are wondering how other Commvault customers have implemented this and what were the challenges. Are you using Command Center or api’s? How are you letting users to restore VM backups? It would be really helpfull to hear your suggestions. We are currently looking at Command center and API options.Thank you! 

I’m deploying a 2 node grid pair (local storage shared using dataserver IP), these servers also have the virtual server agent deployed and are both defined in the pseudo client.When I take node 1 offline (which is the top node in the VSA Proxy order)  simulate a failure the VSA backups go to a waiting state with “14:201” Index from previous job was not found on MediaAgent, When I take node 2 offline the MediaAgent resources failover as you’d expectThe current VMware pseudo client is V1 indexing, if I create a new pseudo client and upgrade it to V2 indexing will this resolve the issue and allow jobs to continue to run if the primary VSA proxy/MediaAgent is offline?Also, I know that you need to disable the existing pseudo client, create a new one, run the workflows to update / import configs, but can I get away with just creating a new pseudo client and running the upgrade to v2 workflow (i’ll happily re-create the configuration) and leaving the old pseudo client running the legacy envir

Hi all. I have a question about Virtualize Me - Vmware. I have a physical server, which I want to make a clone of, to our Vmware environment. I do not want the cloned server to be connected to the network in anyway as its a DC server. So my question is, when the Virtualize Me process is running, will the server at any point be connected to the network for the restore process to work or is all done “offline”? Thanks-Anders
