Block level bk configuration for windows server

Hi @Nez,Yes you can select files or folders. The agent takes your content and then figures out the volumes which contain the subclient consent so that they can be snapped. Then from the volume, which blocks align to the files/folders you selected and back those up.If you install the block level driver, it keeps track of the blocks that change upfront without figuring it out during the backup - much more efficient.This option is really good when when backing up a LOT of files, and especially a lot of small small files.

Update server to latest patch how do you update physical server agents

As long as the servers version matches what is downloaded it will say up to date.

Backing up 32TB Virtual Machine within few hours.

File restores seem to be the weak spot for IntelliSnap backups of large VM’s.   Yes this is true if restoring from the snapshot copy. This is because the snap has to be presented back to the ESXi host, the VM mounted and read using a transport mode to access the file content. If your array supported non-persistent storage then a live mount from snap and copy out of the files may work much faster. Hoping we will see improvement to file restore performance from snap backup in the future - I’ll see if there is anything to improve this in the pipeline.

This is a very old key dating back to V10 from memory. I’m not sure if its currently used or ignored, but it allowed synthetic full backups to be run on backup copied data. I.e you do incremental snapshot jobs, backup copy, then run synthetic fulls of the backup copied data (on the primary copy). This avoided you from having to do traditional full backup copy jobs from the snap.You of course, cannot run a synthetic full backup on a snapshot copy - has to be backup copied first.

Azure VM snapshot type

Hi @xiwen,Right now its not possible to pick the snapshot redundancy.The VM's are in a region that supports ZRS, so the incremental snapshots automatically use ZRS. The reasons for this are in https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/disks-incremental-snapshots - "Additionally, incremental snapshots potentially offer better reliability with zone-redundant storage (ZRS). If ZRS is available in the selected region, an incremental snapshot will use ZRS automatically."

Worm data deletion

Thank you for your response. When cycles are involved is there any way that we could clear the complete data on the object storage side. Is there any combination we could try like X full backups y incremental backups? or since cycle is in place last full backup will be retained forever. Cycle is there to protect you from not losing all your backups, say, if your tape drive breaks or your storage bucket is inaccessible for some time. But, there is an option to remove cycles and only use days retention - keeping in mind that once the days are hit, the jobs are erased regardless: https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/161377_days_based_retention.html

Hey @Marcos Silva,You have a keen eye in those logs ;)I’ll preface by saying I’m no PostgreSQL expert but this one caught my eye. I searched for previous cases, and I see two camps.There is a PostGreSQL setting which may help SET statement_timeout = 0 There is a hotfix for FR32 which seems to be solving this issue - see highlighted line   That update is likely in maintenance releases of other supported releases - not sure which version you are running currently?

Worm data deletion

Firstly, I want to call out worm here since it has no bearing on your scenarios.WORM is only there to stop users from expiring jobs before their set retention, so it does not impact actual retention rules at all - it just wont let you break the rules once set. 1 full = 1 cycle, so 1 full backup must always be kept. In scenario #1, the second full job you ran will be retained forever - the initial full will meet days and cycles retention and age off. if you never run another full and all settings are default, then that second full will be retained forever.in scenario #2 - the full backup will stay forever. The days requirement will be met, but cycles will never be met to erase the full (otherwise cycles will drop to 0 which is not allowed) This may help - a spreadsheet that helps calculate retention (although it assumes you have incrementals too) - but a handy tool none the less.https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/11921_spreadsheet_for_calculating_retention.html

Yes - the media cannot be read without this option:https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/5132_reusing_imported_media_on_destination_commcell.htmlThe data on the media is not affected by this operation specifically, but the data can be aged, overwritten etc. Probably a good idea to set infinite retention on the tapes just in case. S3 cross region replication

Hi @xiwen,Both DDBs and indexes are automatically protected to your primary storage target. If you are using the vendor to blind copy the data from one location to another, the DDB/Index backup jobs should go along with it. When you configure a replica path, commvault should be able to access the replicated library for the DDB and Index backup jobs. On a side note - unlike other products, Deduplicaiton databases are never needed for restore with Commvault - so you never have to worry about trying to recover a DDB to perform restores. The are only needed for data aging and obviously reducing data footprint on new backups. Similarly DDBs can also be fully reconstructed from the backup data if needed - it just takes longer to do.

Force commservedr storage policy tape selective copy to write monthly and yearly jobs to their own tapes

Hi @mzator,You should be able to see the schedule policy - highlighted below. I tested this out - created a secondary copy in my lab and this policy automatically picked up the association for the DR auxcopy.You should be able to edit that policy → edit the task → select start new media

Registry-Key - s3dfsRootDir

Hi @SMD , Tyvm for your help. Although defined as an additional setting and presence of the key in the MA registry, the path seems not to be utilized. Right one is C$ which is still used for the restore. Any Ideas?     UNC/SMB path wont be supported and kind of defeats the purpose of a having a fast location - latency matters with this type of operation

VMware backpu: Limitation on number of VMs per subclient?

I cant think of any real limitation - I do not believe one exists. Of course back in the day, single stream synthetic full would limit how big you wanted a single subclient. Lump auxcopy jobs could also be another reason to break up the content - but other then that there should not be any hard limit on how many you can configure in a subclient with VM centric (VSA V2)

Yes, but keep in mind the script runs on the proxy / access node not the VM being protected. You can use any scripting language - Commvault will try execute it using the associated application (.bat, .vbs, .ps1 etc.)

Technical Assistance Needed: Secondary Copy of SQL Server Jobs

@FeRox Ok so the jobs need to be on the traditional primary copy to have them auxcopy to a secondary copy. You cannot go from snap primary → secondary copy.To move a snap job from snap primary to traditional primary, you need to run a backup copy job.To run a backup copy, follow these steps:1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies > Storage Policies > [select the desired storage policy].2. Right-click the storage policy and click All Tasks > Run Backup Copy.3. The Backup Copy dialog box will appear.4. On the Backup Copy Options tab, select the appropriate options for the backup copy.5. On the Job Initiation tab, choose whether to run the backup copy immediately or schedule it.6. Click OK to start the backup copy operation. If your other snap jobs are completing OK during the backup copy, I am a little syspect that something isn't working right for your SQL snaps - keep an eye on the backup copy jobs (there should be a parent controller job and individual backup copy jobs

Question on Command center vs CommCell Console

I’m a fan of the Console but I’m told it is no longer going to be supported. I’ve been instructed that I need to stop using the Console in favor of Command Center. Just a couple questions about that though. Do I need to recreate my configuration as Plans on the interface? I’m finding that my Console jobs are running, and I can manage the job, but I don’t seem to be able to make changes to things like policies. If I do setup plans and get everything going in the Command Center, will that override the Console settings? Do I need to do anything in the Console other than to stop using it? I’m also open to any suggestions, tips, etc. that you can provide. Hey @CDobbs,The commcell console is fully supported - you can keep using it and there is no need alter any of your configuration. As Scott said, it may be beneficial to start learning and playing around with Command Center concepts for later down the track.

re: Verification - The drawback is cost which is why its not advised. You can absolutely do it, but consider the read costs associated and/or egress depending on your storage tier and media agent location. Sealing only required with some storage tiers like glacier in certain scenarios. In general is is not required. In some scenarios it may be required to recoup a lot of fragmented space (as S3 data is stored in 8mb files, so if one in-use block is occupying the file, we can’t delete it). That should take years before its an actual problem, if it ever becomes one.
