Hey All, I have a question to the following scenario: Windows MA with an NVME Flashcard Actually the flashcard is formatted with 4K blocksize and we are planning to format the disk for 32KB blocksize as written in BOL ( https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/12411_deduplication_building_block_guide.html ) On the Flashcard we are hosting 3 DDBs. DDB is for backups to an cloudian Backup Device over S3 Protocoll in local Datacenter DDB is for Backups to SAN Attached STorage DDB is for backups into S3 Storage out of the Datacenter I have the following question. Can we use one Windows Partition with 32K Blocksize or should we make 3 partitions with different windows block size ? The second question is which blocksize we need for the DDBs ? ( Block level Deduplication factor ) for all 3 DBs
Hi,I wanted to check what people’s thoughts were about keeping the Commvault components outside of the Active Directory Domain to reduce the risks of being compromised in case of a security breach, e.g. compromised AD Domain Admin credentials. I’ve had some customers ask me about this and wanted to check with the community.Regards,Jeremy
Our Database team which handles SQL servers and SQL databases has sent us a notice that they are wanting to upgrade the SQL Database from 2014 to 2019. “Hello Team,BKR-BKCOM-01/COMMVAULT is still running on an old version of SQL 2014, hence we need to upgrade the server to latest version of 2019. Can you help us on how to proceed? This is a physical server so we need a new physical server to host the 2019 version then move the databases. Once tested, then we can offline the old 2014 version and online the new server to production.”I don't know if they are saying they want a new server for the Commvault Commserve or if they are hinting at their own server, which makes no sense why he added that in the email. Our specs for the commserve easily matches the SQL recommendations for 2019. My only thing i need help on is besides the article:https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/142607_upgrading_microsoft_sql_server_2016_express_to_microsoft_sql_server_2019_standard_edition.htmlIs
Hi All , I am in process of creating a test case validation document for commvault backup , could some one please help me if there is a reference document or what points I can include
Report to find if a specific username is being used in multiple locations on Commvault We recently changed the password of a username that was being used to backup different environments. Is there a report in Commvault that I can use to search for a username such as domain\username so as to find out if it is being used to backup say 10 different environments.
Hi there! Could you please address me to the right procedure how to deploy Standby CommServe Server? I have found this page (https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/essential/128066_deploying_standby_commserve_server.html), however we have no HyperScale Appliance it is just ordinary Commserve Server So, if I want to deploy Standby CommServe as DR site in case of speed failover, should I deploy the Standby CommServe as written there (https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/essential/106129_installing_standby_commserve_host.html) In general, is deploying of the Standby CommServe host time consuming process or is it more intuitive task?
Hello,I have a question regarding this procedure (https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/essential/105913_installing_feature_releases_on_standby_commserve_host_and_sql_clients.html).Should be the point 2 ( From the Command Center, install the feature release or the maintenance release in the Standby Commserve Host and the SQL clients in both the production and standby CommServe hosts as follows ) run completely from the standby host?
Commvault new licensing model very straight forward, but when we compare with earlier version its very flexible to match customer requirement. New license good for some one using hypervisor environment and if they planning to move cloud. But this new licensing model not suitable for onprem setup like they are using physical servers and are they have to backup separate NAS server etc….because its very costly backup solution.
We recently had a great thread asking this very question, and the content that was covered deserves its own article!Keep in mind, these are guidelines and recommendations…..your mileage may vary!Sizing Media Agents and their capacity is a common question within Support and on this community. How much capacity a Media Agent can handle is purely based number of DDB disks and their size. The number of partitions has nothing to do with capacity planning. How many partitions to use will be based on how many DDB disks and MAs are there; it’s a configuration item. For example, one Extra Large Media Agent with 2 DDB disks gives you 500TB capacity regardless of how many partitions you create! To plan out your setup, follow these simple steps:Determine how much storage capacity needed. Use below table to determine how many Media Agents are needed for your required storage capacity.Note that there could be multiple combinations giving the same capacity, you can pick any of the combinations by consi
Is there anyone who would care to speak about (some pros and cons) using Snapshots to preserve Disk Library Mount Paths’s content? Our Storage System provide Snapshots that are read-only—they can’t be altered, overwritten, or deleted directly from Media Agent Servers. We are evaluating the possibility of creating a recovery point every 12 hours using Snapshots as an additional action beyond those described on the following pages. Mount Paths are essentially File Systems exported via NFS from Storage Systems that don’t support WORM.
Hello everyone,I’m curious to know how many media agents you guys are running for your backups? I have about 300 VMs + fileshares where I have daily, weekly, monthly and yearly jobs running from a specific media agent. The server fails from time to time due the amount of information that goes through it, a reboot would fix it and all the jobs would continue without a problem. I’m aware that I need more servers dedicated to act as media agent but I do not know how many I should have and the specs they should have. The media agent has the following specs: 2 CPU: E5-2670 v3 @ 2.30GHzRam: 256 GBA support agent mentioned one time that he saw some org having 10 servers acting as media agent only to run half what we have. It sound a bit overkill to me and I believe the specs of their servers may have been worst than what we’re currently running. So, how many media agent are you using in your org? What are the specs for your servers?
Hello EveryoneI need your expertise advise on a failover solution for the backup configuration across multi master and master-slave setup. We want to know can if and how we can configure backups in multi-master and master-slave setup in such a way that the backups do not fail if the node where backup is running goes offline. ThanksSrikanth
Hi..Scenario:Some clients are being re- deployed using Jenkins + Ansible... This re- deployment contains a decoupled install of the CVLT agent. After re- deployment, we need to go to "Client Computers", "New Client", "Unix", then enter the Client Name and Host Name along with "Fetch the configuration from the client that is installed in decoupled mode".What would be the best way to automate this, so one could skip the above steps... ? Can this be done from the client side...? (.SImwrapper tool maybe?)Any advice on this would be VERY much appreciated.. Thank you..Best regardsKim Rubeck Solstar
Hi all,I would like to discuss the topic about Maximum and Fixed Number of Readers (Stream Readers). This option can be set up at Schedules window (Auxiliary Copy Job Options). Is there any rule, that says when there is better to have Maximum number of stream readers or just set only one allow stream reader? Especially for NDMP and ordinary File System agent aux jobs?
You may have heard or saw news that Microsoft will be deprecating Internet Explorer 11 to work with M365 apps and services on August 17th 2021, and full deprecation is slated to occur in 2022, due to the changes in web standards and availability of modernized IE/Edge browser. With this announcement we have decided to also deprecate support for Internet Explorer 11, and focus development/testing efforts on modernized browsers that take advantage of and accelerate many of the technologies that go into our Commvault Command Center. Leveraging Internet Explorer 11 in FR24+ may provide a degraded experience, so we recommend modern versions of Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari when accessing Commvault Command Center and web console. As we continue to evolve Commvault Command Center and pack it full of technology to enhance the user experience, speed, and load times, leveraging the recommended modern browsers will ensure the best possible experience. You can always find a list of suppor
Hi there,I would like to discuss the following situation:I want to disable backup activity on the client, however I want to keep aging of associate data as usual. Is there any workaround for it? It is possible to release lincence and deconfigure client, then data aging goes well... However, my question is:It is possible to keep data aging on the client that is only disabled from the backup activity? Thanks for your responses!

My Boss found something he wants as a report and I don't know if there is a way specifically provide it. After reviewing a FLA (File Level Analytical) Report, the report shows specific servers that are backed up showing how much data we are backing up per client that hasn't been modified within Less than 3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 2-5 Years, More than 5 Years. My boss loves this view point on a client level but wants to know if Commvault can do this on a grand level to show how much data we are backing up as a whole that hasnt been modified within Less than 3 Months, 3-6 Months, 6-12 Months, 1-2 Years, 2-5 Years, More than 5 Years. Does anyone know if there is a report such as this? My boss wants it at per site, but trying to think Commvault level and see if this is possible at library level, or media agent level?
One of the benefits of application modernization, containers, and orchestrating your data-center with Kubernetes is the ability to move to 'fully programmable' infrastructure. Now, while this makes the developers day much much easier as they provision apps / storage whenever and wherever they need it - what impact does that have on backup & recovery?Well, for Metallic (and Commvault) it is simple...Commvault is cloud-native, and we use Kubernetes Label Selectors to automatically discover applications based on the 'labels' that developers apply to their apps.Let's take a look at a standard application definition:apiVersion: v1kind: ConfigMapmetadata: name: postgres-config-demo namespace: env-prod labels: app: postgresdata: POSTGRES_DB: demopostgresdb POSTGRES_USER: demopostgresadmin POSTGRES_PASSWORD: demopostgrespwd---apiVersion: v1kind: Servicemetadata: name: postgres namespace: env-prod labels: app: postgresspec: ports: - port: 5432 name: postgres clusterIP: N
We have two clients that we are backing up which are taking up a huge amount of time to back up. Commvault confirmed its not the backups but the data traffic that is causing extreme lengths in time to back up. My networking team cannot go any further to increase the throughput for data. Brought this issue to my management and suggested to have a normal backup happen to the client on a daily basis and with a weekly full but the difference is to only have the backups not backup anything 45 days or older. Then once a quarter do a full backup of everything (including all the 45 days and older)This runs into an issue because I don't know how to setup another default subclient on the clients in order to generate a quarterly backup. I know normally this is all resolved if we have Commvault deduplication, but my companies motto is work harder not smarter and decided its to costly to have this option. Is there a way to get this results of:daily/weekly/monthly backup with only data that is withi
Hello,There are two options to configure the CIFS Backup. What is the better option to use ?Via array management or via Client Computer ? Thanks !
Hello, What is the best way to backup NFS and CIFS Shares presented by Netapp Storage ? Thanks !
Has anyone configured the FIM on the CV infrastructure ?Which paths/files have been included in the monitoring ?Thanks
Many people may believe that when they create a create an Exchange Database subclient and follow this documentation Configuring Consistency Checks for Exchange Database Backups (commvault.com) that performing consistency checks is on by default and that that procedure only applies to Database Availability Groups. However, the setting you will need to check is not on the subclient, but rather under the Advanced Schedule Options. exTiDbBackup.log18260 8bac 04/02 23:15:37 805061 CsExchangeShadowSet::GetSkipIntegrityCheckOption() - Skip Integrity check:TRUE18260 7674 04/02 23:16:10 805061 CsExchangeShadow::GetSkipIntegrityCheckOption() - Setting throttling to [0]18260 7674 04/02 23:16:10 805061 CsExchangeShadow::GetSkipIntegrityCheckOption() - Perform Integrity check of Logs Only:FALSE18260 7674 04/02 23:16:10 805061 CsExchangeShadow::GetSkipIntegrityCheckOption() - Skipping integrity check based on user option.18260 7674 04/02 23:16:10 805061 [CsExchangeShadowSet::parallelbackup]Sk
Recently I was on a call with a prospect that had an RFP for a solution that would copy PSTs to a central location so they could be backed up.While Commvault could backup the PSTs files, the major issue with this is that PSTs were actively being used by end users. This means Outlook would have the PSTs open, thus locked to a basic file copies and even if we used the VSS support to get snapshot of them they would not be in a consistent state in some cases. Therefore, this would lead to backing up corrupted PST files. Furthermore, if a user had a say 2GB PST today and they added a single email to it, the entire PST would need to be copied\backed up again. With Commvault we would dedupe the data before going to the ContentStore but with other backup or file copy solution this would lead to possible exponential growth. PSTs are also not supported on network shares, mainly because if there is a network interruption they can easily lead to corrupted PSTs. PSTs also cannot be searched or mana
