I am struggling greatly with how CommVault handles Exchange Online backup data aging. I have heard on numerous occasions that CommVault never actually purges message data from disk when an Exchange Online backup reaches its retention limit.It was explained to me that the data is just “marked as aged” and is never deleted from disk. Since there is no backup cycle (incremental forever) per-se with Exchange Online Backups that means the junk message I receive from Amazon today will persist on disk for all time.Please convince me how this is not a really bad solution - help me come up with convincing argument against moving away from CommVault for Exchange Online backups. Rumor has it CV is developing a way to properly purge/age data but there is no expectation it will happen any time soon. Thanks!

Hi all. Today we have a network setup where Commserve and MediaAgents resides on one network and clients on another.network seperated by a firewall. We use one-way direction connection, where clients opens the connection to the Commserve/MediaAgents. My questions is, wouldn't it be more secure to have a one-way direction connection from the CommServe/MediaAgents to the clients and not like we have it today. As I understands it, it was the standard way of doing the network settings in the “old” days. Regards-Anders

Imagine the following situation: You have a VM, with windows . Machine is called VM1. That VM1 has a file agent, and -for example- an Oracle system configured. That VM1 is being cloned, on virtualization level, to VM2. Of course, VM2 is being renamed on machine level to VM2. (hostname).How can we reuse the same commvault agent VM1 settings, and “clone” it to VM2.With that I mean : without reinstalling everything of commvault on VM2, and without the need to figure out the passwords which were used in VM1 Oracle agent.

Hi there! My task is to test how Commvault Endpoint protection works. However, I am still a little bit confused. How should I deploy Commvault Endpoint Protection client? There is only possibility to deploy standard File System agents to ensure backup and recovery of PCs, isn't?. So, where is the diferrence between standard Backup solution and Endpoint protection? In fact, what is the best Commvault product for disaster recovery of endpoint clients - specifically personal computers? Is it really Commvault Endpoint Protection?Thanks in advance for your help!

The file system backups are showing as successful(no warning) however failing to protect some of the files; I  am wondering why the job is not completing with partial sucess and showing it as a VSS issue.  Is that becuase there are no application specific vss writers for the application and hence quiesing is not working its magic [C:\Program Files (x86)\BigFix Enterprise\BES Client\__BESData\SiteData.db] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Hello, We have multiple sites and all these sites have different WAN bandwidths. All are DASH copying to  a single location. All these locations have different working hours. We want to create multiple bandwidth throttling rules. What would be the best way to approach this? Should we create the rules at the source Media Agent with throttling the send traffic? Thank You 

​​Size on disk 55,74 TB, but data written is 24,77 TB​​​​​​Hi folks,I’m trying to figure this out for few hours and I still didn’t find anything wrong in the Storage Policy, DiskLib, Media Agent properties... Backup jobs are also fine. I have counted 10800 jobs manually, just to be sure that the size is correct. 24,77 TB of data is written. BUT how it can be possible, that size on disk takes 55,74 TB?Did someone had the same situation?

I have a system which can only backup to an FTP site. We use a cloud-based FTP service for our FTP. However, I would like to retain a copy of the backups from that system in our CommVault environment.Has anyone used CommVault to backup an FTP site directly? I could, in theory, automate the extraction of the FTP data to a local file server and backup the data that way. However, it would be great if I could skip that step and grab the data directly into CV via FTP.Any advice?Thanks!

I have a CV 9 Linux 2.6.9-101.0.0.0.1.ELsmp client trying to backup to a dedup storage policy, and I get this error message:Error Code: [82:164]Description: Failed to open Deduplication Database (DDB) please check network connectivity.When I disable dedup for that client, the backup runs fine.I have other Linux clients of a similar (albeit, not identical) “vintage” that have no problem deduping to the same storage policy. One difference is that this particular client is behind a firewall, and I’m wondering if this is somehow the issue… although I can’t understand why this would be the case.We’d upgrade this environment if we could, knowing that CV 9 is not supported… but we can’t… so I’m asking this question here.Any help is appreciated. 

Hello,I’ve just installed a client with AD iData agent, pushing it from commcell. Unfortunately the AD backup fails due to no access / wrong user.I added the AD user as normaly done, “domain\user”, in commcell. But looking at the account used for AD backup on the client it looks like “domain\domain\user”. So it seems that commvault adds the domain to that user account.I’ve read the documentation but I can’t find anything on that. Can someone point me to documentation stating that behaviour.BRHenke

Commvault has worked intensively to extend IntelliSnap support to databases running in public clouds over the last V11 Service releases. This means, regardless if your Oracle, DB2, MS SQL Server or SAP HANA database workloads are running on-prem or in AWS or Microsoft Azure you can always enjoy values like low impact backups, snapshot copies, fast recoveries as well as rapid databases cloning.  For this, we leverage is AWS EBS snapshots and Managed Disk snapshots in Microsoft Azure. Support for SAP HANA on Azure Netapp Files has been added with FR 11.22. Some of you might be concerned about the cost of IntelliSnap in the cloud. One or more snaps per database and per day kept for 7 days can quickly generate a good amount of snapshot consumption. Both AWS and Microsoft Azure are billing snapshot consumption on a per GB basis.  Game over?  Not at all! Hi all,I’m looking for some steer with regards to a disk library and mount paths move between MediaAgents. I may be over-thinking this but just looking for clarification.My client has a MediaAgent which to be decommissioned. The mount paths are volumes presented from the SAN which have also now been presented to the new MediaAgent. (Offline in Disk Mgmt on new MA awaiting action).Is this just as simple as following the Migrate Shared Disk Libraries option in Disk Libraries - Advanced to move the mount paths configuration to the new MediaAgent or are there any gotchas to be aware of?  Normally, I’d just go through a mount path move process but can’t in this case.Thanks in advance.   

I have a CloudLibrariy in Azure configured with three Cool Blobs. (three mount paths). Commvault reports Application Size 30TB and Data on Disk 50TB. In Azure the disks reports to be filled with 12TB. We have verified that WORM is disabled on the volumes in Azure. It seems that Commvault messes up the statistics for some reason. Have anyone seen this before on Azure CloudLibs?

I’m trying to use the CommVault powershell module to work with the API and integrate our backups with monitoring, so that our users will be able to  see monitori ng and backup stats at a glance. Should be easy enough to show jobs, but the powershell  Get-CVJob function is broken. I had some help previously in the forum, and the broken bit was verified and posted to the gitHub powershell for CommVault projects, but I haven’t seen any movement since. Does anybody know how to fix this issue or what kind of timeframe I am working with to get this module fixed? 

Which port need to open among CS, MA and VSAProxy to take Openstack Backup. I want to take FileSystem /DB or VM backup from Openstack Environment.

I currently have a workflow setup to do a weekly backup/restore of some Windows filesystems, which works great.  Is it possible to do the same thing with a Workflow and backup/restore a single Microsoft SQL database (out of place)? I cloned the workflow I have for the Windows files and was trying to modify it for MSSQL.  It looks like I can change the agent type to MSSQL and even set an instance name.  However, I’m not sure how to define a specific database.  As I’m typing, I just thought of maybe a possible solution?  Maybe I need to create a new backup set with the database(s) I want to test? Any recommendations on the best way to automate these backups/restores?

Hello,My commvault is over capacity(license), and i need to release space.i already checked the retention of all backups and it´s ok, and SP and schedule is ok.i run the data verification to check what backup data i can remove and release space.The license reset has already been done 6x.Does anyone have any help?  

We currently have a ‘dual-site’ scenario - each with 2 media agents attached to a Dell/EMC ME4084 disk library.  Commvault is configured with a CommCell in each site - with failover enabled.  Backup images are secured in each local site and then a secondary copy replicated to the alternate site.As I am sure is common - the questions are being raised around immutable backups in this CV environmentI have seen documentation regarding immutability of cloud based backups, and discussions of WORM technology - but am unsure as to what applies to us here with our CommVault / disk library configuration.V11 SP20Any input appreciated…..
