Hi, We have huge amount of data to be copied to Tape for Offsite copy .We did setup the Tape library to have data backed up to Hyperscaler on commvault then to the Tape connected via Fibre. the data are in Perabytes . I look for best practice to utilize the Tape for the offsite copy. Appreciate any help on this
Hi all,We need to apply security patches to the SQL Server used by our CommServe. We'll patch manually, without any third-party tools.I found this doc:https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/essential/including_windows_os_and_sql_server_updates_when_installing_commvault_feature_and_maintenance_releases_01.html?_gl=1*zcnoq0*_gcl_au*NzI5MjE2NzU0LjE3NTQ1OTEyMDI.*_ga*MjAzNTA5NjMzMy4xNzU0NTE3NTM5*_ga_M2TFPKFW4N*czE3NTQ1OTEyMDMkbzEyJGcxJHQxNzU0NTkxMjM5JGoyNCRsMCRoMA..But it seems focused on upgrades, and I’m not sure if that’s the same as manually patching SQL Has anyone done this? Is it safe to patch SQL manually, or can it cause issues with Commvault?
Hello all Our Business is currently in the process of migrating our existing services hosted in a onprem data centre into the cloud hosted by a third party. As part of this migration we have a number of existing VMs which host both Oracle and SQL databases which will be migrated as is including the current IP.Our CommVault backup solution has now been configured with new media agents and associated Cloud Library & GlobalDDB. We have also started to build out plans based on the existing plans with the exception these are now using the new libraries / media agents etc. What is the best method to update the existing clients to point them at the new plans / media agents just as I’ve seen on the client properties under “Network” and “Network Summary” there are details in a file called “FwConfigLocal.txt”. This has details pointing to the old Media Agents, are we meant to manually edit this on each client after the migration to point at the new Media Agents? If so how do I locate the “rem
Hello Team What are best practices for MS SQL backup and especially restore for big databases in terms of splitting DB into multiple files (SQL side)? Let’s assume we have 10 TB MS SQL database. What is better:Having 1 file for whole DB Having 10x 1 TB files Having 160x 64 GB files? And why?Let’s assume we can have 4-16 backups streams for this DB.It’s question about performance of backup/restore/DB itself, not about management and handling with files or underlying storage raid distribution/layout per DB/file. Kind regards,eMF
My bad, I misunderstood and now i can't figure out how to edit my question. We currently have 4 commserves, all very large. We use Hyperscales in all the environments. We are going to set up two more and are considering having a separate install of SQL so it can be managed by the customer apart from Commvault. I was just wondering if anyone has done this and your experience doing it that way? THx
Hi,I configured Livesync betweeen two commserve servers. They connect to the same network without firewall enable. I run “Test Failover” test and all good without problems. Then “Mantenance Failover” all test are ok, without problem. I have tried searching, but with search terms I keep getting looped back to topics covering snapshot backups and filters. If a VM has an agent installed, (therefore not taking VM/Snapshot backups) but is powered off in VMWare….is there a way to have it skip backing up the machine (or do something else like fail earlier, throw an alert, or something else you might suggest)? The issue is we have alot of machines where we are just not told to stop backing them up from the team that owns them, and just don’t want to reach out every time we see a job stuck in pending because it can’t be reached. Trying to free up resources to research actual problems, and not mask actual connection issues. We don’t want to manually disable machines that might be powered off for some temporary issue.I understand snapshot backups can filter by powered off, but these are machines that have reasons to have an agent installed and can’t utilize snapshots.running commserve v11.32.38Thanks!
Hi Commvault users, Regarding backing up VSA’s (proxy servers) that are used for VM image backups. Do you recommend backing them up ? if so Daily, weekly etc.Being just proxy servers I’m guessing there is no real need to back them up if you can build a new one quickly. Any advice is welcomed. Kind RegardsTerry
I’ve got a TrueNAS server with a bunch of CIFS shares. I setup a Windows File System client to do the backups of the CIFS shares, using our CommCell master to do the backups. Unfortunately, no matter what, it backups up all the same files for both Full and Incremental backups, which slows things down and screws up temp disk space usage. So what’s the process to figure out why this is happening? This is around 1.7Tb of data and 2+ million files, so it really slows things down. CommVault 11.36.5? something, pretty new. The TrueNAS is Enterprise 13.0-U6.2 release. The Windows backup server is running Windows Server 2016 (I know, I know...) The TrueNAS runs Samba internally to do CIFS shares. Not sure where the disconnect is here. Has anyone else got this working properly?
Hi all, We have a project to apply CIS Benchmark Level 1 settings to our Windows servers, and that includes our CV environment. I’m looking for feedback on the process. Good, bad, ugly, etc. Thanks G
I'm testing Exchange online email restore using the "Received Time" filtering option. I've set a received time of (for example) of 2019 - 2020 but I'm seeing email from as far back as 2000. has anyone else used this filtering options and what were your results. In full disclosure, I did also select the option to show deleted items but that SHOULDN'T affect the results in my window.
Hi all, I’ve been starting to look at Data Insights, and Sensitive Data Governance and went to create a test project to try it out and got the following error:Error creating EDiscoveryUser.Exception:User password doesn't follow minimum complexity requirementsIs that complexity requirement coming from CV itself? Is it looking at our domain requirements? Is this user local to CV or a domain user?Is it possible to assign a user object?Just looking to find out more about what it’s doing at this stage, thanks.G
Hello Commvault Community,We are planning to migrate to the latest Commvault version, which no longer supports V1 indexing. As we prepare for this transition, I would like to gather insights and advice from those who have already gone through this process.Questions:What are the essential steps to ensure a smooth migration from V1 to V2 indexing? What are the critical considerations to keep in mind during the migration? Are there any known issues or pitfalls that we should be aware of? What best practices can you share for managing the migration effectively?Any detailed experiences, tips, or documentation links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support and guidance!
Dear Team, I am planning to perform an email restore for one of the users from the Compliance Server. I noticed an option during the process—could you please explain what will happen if this option is enabled or disabled? Regards,Mani D
we are having windows always on HA sql cluster , currently we are taking fileand app consitent vm backup and seperatly agent based sql backup . now we need to make DR for this in our azure site which is the better option !> VM replication , do i need to change the vm backup method to app aware ? in this case only primary node will be converted as app aware right ? i dont want to run the vm backup every 2 hour , instead i need to run log backup , can i just schedule log backup for same client will this get replicated once the log backup completed ? 2 > warm sql replicaton which one is recommended way
We will be adding a new VMWARE Envrioment V8 to our Commvault backup; we use Intellisnap backups at the moment, however, in V8 we are using Datastore Clusters; how does that impact Intellinsnap and would the process be same Adding Storge snapshot engine to Commvault Setup Subclient and use the snap engine however, would there be impact if say due to storage DRS a VM moves from one datastore to another. I have seen with Intellisnap (Nutanix) if you have a VM in 2 Datastore it fails the whole job; yet to runinto this senario with pure but how would this work?
Does anyone have any information from Commvault regarding CommServe support for windows server 2025?I have tested it in our lab and it seems fine.
Hi Team,I’d like to know if there is a way to run PostgreSQL, MariaDB and MSSQL backups from scripts on the clients similarly to RMAN.I founf the Save as Script option on the Subclient, but we woud like to use our own commands (pg_dump ${database}) and still make sure the backups are witten to HSX.ThanksFrancesco
Hi:Which is the best way to migrate from Commvault to Commvault Cloud? (Metallic) I have been told that there is not an utility to do it and that should be a restore and backup process just like as going from another software to Commvault, but I guess that a lot of customers may have the same requirement.Any thoughts will be appreciated.Best,Paul
Hi team,Can I back up an OPENVMS v7.3-2 (AlphaServer ES47) system with CommVault? or is there a backup strategy?is it not supported? on the dopcumentation https://documentation.commvault.com/v11/expert/openvms_file_system_agent_system_requirements.html mention only HP OpenVMS 8.3, and 8.4. regards,
Need to shutdown one end of a livesynch HA setup without screwing up DDB or losing any data.MA w/DAS bare metal 2U & 2 power store arraysCS is a bare metal 1U Total newb question i know. I have created a new subclient policy but instead of using this default subclient i created a new sublclient to take backup of only selected extensions and assigned to all 100 laptops.now when i created a schedule policy and assigned schedule policy to a laptop client group .the backup us being run for the default subclient as well as the new one which i created.i have disbabled default subclient from policy by “activity control” but still the schedule policy executes job for both and its causing lot of failures in my job and confusion during restore.raised case with support ( 250331-339) but they are not able to do anything from last 10 days.
Hi, I’m having problems with a Commvault Oracle Data Guard configuration. I have a Data Guard pseudo-client which handles the backups for the environment which has 2 databases on 2 different hosts: dbhost01 and dbhost02. It is configured to run backups on the primary node. A few days ago a database failover happened (from dbhost01 to dbhost02), it was successful, so no issues with that, currently the primary database is on dbhost02.My problem is that since the failover the commvault backups cannot run, because it is still trying to reach the database on dbhost01 (which is shutdown). It sees that the database on dbhost02 is open, but does not even try to start the backup there. What is the correct way to configure this? The whole point of having this Data Guard configuration in Commvault is that we don’t have to modify anything in commvault when a failover/switchover happen, so I’m looking for a solution that provides this. Thank you for any tips, solutions, etc. Daniel
