Adding new media agent to existing environment

Hello Guys, I will be adding a new media agent to our existing comcell environment. After installing commvault software on the new media agent and sharing the mount paths of the disk library with the new media agent. Will the storage policies associated with this disk library be updated automatically to include the new media agents in the "data paths" tab? Or should I manually navigate to each storage policy and add the new media agent in the "data paths" tab?

How to find details on Metallic cloud storage

My Aux Copy jobs going to Metallic cloud storage have been stopped for the past three days. I’ve asked my network team if there are any issues and they are asking for the connection information. I can see my on-prem media agents easily enough but can’t seem to find any of the details for Metallic. How do I find network details on the Metallic cloud storage?

recopying contents from a tape that was physically dropped and is no longer usable

Hello! This morning I was all thumbs and dropped a tape. This caused the little pin inside to come loose and the tape was barely holding. I have to consider it dead now. Is there a way to flag the data inside to be recopied to another tape? Thanks!

Data Retention and Storage Policy

Hi all, I need to archive files for 1 year, but I do not have the archive licenses. My current configuration is as follows: Storage Policy: 1 year, 0 cycles. Incremental backup every day (the first backup was a full backup). A share where files to be saved for 1 year are deposited. If the incremental backup completes successfully, a Unix script deletes files older than 15 days from the share. Problem: The jobs do not expire after 1 year. Thanks

Issues with Performance and Frequent Cleaning Requests on HPE MSL2024 Library

Hello Community, We recently acquired a new infrastructure that includes Commvault version 11.32.69, an HPE ProLiant DL360 physical server running Windows Server 2022, and an HPE MSL2024 library with two LTO9 drives. This infrastructure was implemented to back up a small environment consisting of SQL databases, a VMware 6.0 environment with 20 virtual machines, and some SQL Server databases. Although the initial setup seemed promising, we have encountered two significant issues that are impacting our backup operations: Excessive Cleaning Cartridge Requests (Case 250110-656) 🧹: During backups, the LTO9 drives frequently requested cleaning cartridges. This issue persisted even after HPE replaced both drives three times and after adjusting the Drive Clean parameter in the library properties to a value of 515. Low Backup Performance (Case 250110-659) 🐢: In our performance tests, we were unable to exceed a backup speed of 250 GB/h for virtual machines and file system backups. This perform

Gridstor configuration in Commvault 11.36

Hi, I am testing 11.36 version and realized Commcell Console is not installed anymore with new installations. I you need to use Commcell Console you have to request to technical support. Is there a way to configure Gridstor from Command Center? Regards, Matias

DDB lookup very high percentage (98%) of backup load with 68% deduplication savings

Here is a screenshot of the current status of the ddb. Backups are running over desired time windows with 98.27% of load being ddb lookups. We are close to capacity currently with backup storage though this will be resolved soon. How can we resolve the high DDB lookup % issue? DDB and job status screenshots below.

MP deletion

Hi Guys, I have disk library with 8 MPs inside and 1 of them selected /plan for decommission as i dont need it or must destroy hardware under it (mean plan for decommission as selected on MP level “disable MP for new data” + “prevent data block references for new backup” 1st mine question is why CV still, after so many years on market, have no possibility to decomm MP. Mean here simple click on MP from GUI and then options “decomm it” which will move/spill from that MPs to other MPs in the same library all data (jobs) and dedup data for jobs ? And again as probably will be here such suggestion i dont want move MP to other place as i want to get rid of it and have clean environment beside to remeber that MP called X is laying here but i real is not need :( ! But as i have not what i want i must take longer way to achieve what i want so wait till data decommiss ….here lucky if user have not INFINITIVE retention as then CV is as child “can not do anything” But let imagine that we have 1 m

MediaAgent Deletion Impact Report shows an association that is not there ?

Hi! We’ve recently moved media-agents to new servers, and i’m now in the process of “cleaning up”. And for 3 of the 4 media-agents the report showed nothing, and i could delete the mediaagent without any issue. However, for the last media-agent, it complains about “Proxy Server to Perform Intellisnap Backup Operations”, and lists a client name, a backupset name, and a subclient name. This was “correct”, because there was a subclient there with that name that was configured for intellisnap (but not in use, and had no backups). So i deleted the subclient… but even so, now several days later, when i try to delete the media-agent, the report still complains about the same “issue”. I could ofcourse just ignore the “warning” and proceed with the deletion, but i’d much prefer for the report to show that there is no association, before proceeding with the deletion.

Disable WORM storage lock feature

We have doubt about Disable WORM storage lock feature. Currently we are on 11.32.59 and storage is Netapp GRID and HPE Catalyst.We are planning to enable the Storage lock feature. If in case we have to disable the WORM storage lock once enabled, we have to follow the below steps. https://support.commvault.com/Article/Details/82504 In our environment we dont have SMTP configured.What is the workaround here? Please advise.

MRR Cloud Backup Retention Date Change

Currently we have our MRR Backups set to have a monthly Full set to be stored for 2557 days, which is 7 years. This used to be the way we stored tapes but I feel that we need to change our thinking, as our system has 7 years of data and we did a full when we switched over to MRR which was uploaded. So for our Company Policy in theory every monthly full has 7 years worth of data. So at most I would think saving a year on the cloud is fine. It would keep us safe from most issues unless something sits for a year without being found or triggered. Long way to get to my question. If I change our extended retention from 7 years to 1 year will it need to run a new Full Backup and reupload everything again or will that first backup we seeded at the start will just be there and all the other backups will just age out after they hit 1 year? I really hope that makes sense, it does in my head. Thanks for any info.

How to keep the latest backup longer?

Hello, We have Commvault server, simpana version 11.28.68. We have situation that we want to keep the old backup whose retention expires soon. Also we disabled the schedule policy for this specific subclient.Is it recommended that we disable Data Aging for this Storage policy? If we disable Data aging for this Storage policy, backup jobs should not be deleted regardless of exceeded retention? Best regards,Elizabeta

mix of Fast and slower disk in one pool on a Spill and Fill?

Looking for advice or documentation to support changes. Running 11.28.126 I need to add slower (cheaper) disk storage to my Commvault backups. I have a DISA Cloud virtual environment and it offers 2 speeds of primary disk. Tire 1 High Performance Tire 2 Moderate performance Tier 1 -~ all Flash/SSD disk drives Tier 2 -~ 7200 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives My Goal is to add the slower disk to hold about +60% of my backups. Then the Faster disk can be used for the daily backups and quick restores and the slower disk can be used for long term storage (backups older than 7 days) and old archive restores I have a single, all in 1 Commserv/Media agent… server. It currently has 16TB of local storage Disk attached to it in 2TB disk increments (8 storage disks). Only one storage pool. All setup as Spill and Fill. Option A: I see in current documentation that I should use “dedicated storage pools for high-performance disks and slower disks”. Option B: But I also see documentation that

Issue with 1Touch Restore of windows system

Hi I’m trying to use 1Touch restore, and I have the backup set to backup everything, and checked the system state box, but when we go and pick the backup set to restore it gives an error “System State components needed for 1Touch recovery [ Offline Files, Registery, System Protected Files ] are not available in the backups selected……….” The source is Windows 2016, with 3 hard drives, on my backup job (default backupset) in contents I have “\” and checked “Backup System State”. Using commvault version 11.32.63 platform release 2023E Client is at same version. Anything else I need to do to get the system state backed up right? Thanks -Brian

MSSQL not deduplicating with Commvautl unless using VSS.

Hi, I am running Commvault with MSSQL, but these backups do not deduplicate; the only savings we get are from compression. None of our MSSQL backups deduplicate at all (+200 DB Clients), we made sure we did not have anything affecting deduplication, like db side encryption etc. If you run a Commvault backup, and then run another one after the previous has finished on a system with no activity, we would expect 99% dedup savings, but instead of that we have between 50% to 70% cause it is only compressing and the new compressed data has new signatures every time. Our workaround is to use VSS, that works as a file backup, The MSSQL backup with VSS enabled deduplicate with almost 99.9% savings doing the same test. VSS also comes with its own problems like slow backup performance and MSSQL with VSS is not considered best practice for Commvault. We have over 200 Commvalt clients with MSSQL, and this happens to all of them, we have all with VSS enabled I opened a ticket in November 2022 and it

MYSQL Backup Issues

MYSQL backups are failing with the following error Backup of [~mysql~] MySQL database failed. The error message [~/usr/bin//mysqldump: Deprecated program name. How to Move AWS Jobs to OnPrem

Hello. We sent 300TB of backup jobs to AWS when we were squeezed for space. Now that we have the additional space, what’s the best way to copy the data back down? These jobs only exist in AWS with a long retention so I can’t just let them age naturally. We have 3 copies for the storage policy: Primary Pure Storage Flashblade - Synchronous Copy AWS - Selective Copy; “Do not select Automatically” (we manually choose the jobs) What are my options? Big Data Apps on no longer needed copy

Hello all! In our environment, we have created a temporary copies within our few storage policies - (call them copy 6 and 7). Those were tape copies. We have keep some backup there for 2 months, but it is no longed needed. We do not need those copies within those storage policies any more. But for now, even if they are no longer any backup retained on this 6-7 copy, we do have a lot of “Big Data Apps” jobs retained on those copies. We would like to delete those copies because it interferes with our “workflow” which picks jobs for copies and it's keeping to mark them to copy for 6-7 copy. (even if copy is disabled) So my question is - what exactly this Big Data Apps is? It is some kind of Index, am I correct? If those “Big Data Apps” are stored on copies 6-7 are there any dependencies for other copies, other jobs keep in other/same storage policies? Can we just delete copy 6-7 from our storage policies even if they are still those Big Data Apps stored on it, and it won't affect the rest
