Vmware independent disks

We recently had to make changes (stig) to our VMware environment and changed to independent disks. From my reading on V11.20 we now have to switch to using IntelliSnap if we want to snapshot the vm servers? Is IntelliSnap another License that we have to purchase or will the option to enable IntelliSnap show up after we have defined an Array? We were using the provided VMware client to take snap shots which was working fine until the change to independent disks was made. Now we get Independent disks are not supported error.

Virtual Lab functionality

I would like to covers about problem with Commvault. The problem concerns the configuration of the Virtual Lab functionality. When attempting to configure a policy, Commvault will not be able to "see" CV_VLAB_GATEWAY or any network configured in the VMware environment. Such a machine is in the client's Vmware environment. I will be very appreciate for help

Storage size estimation for backup

I would need assistance to estimate the storage size for backup, as we have nearly 140 + VM’s new servers which need to be backup daily, weekly Full and monthly tape, In order procure the license from commvault i would need to provide the following details but i’m unable to get all the details as i’ve confused between application size, Total VM size, Backup size, when i download the VM’s from vCenter igot all the clients list including VM’s size but when i calculate the total Storage based storage provision space, the toal size is showing nearly 200TB but when i login to each VM and look up for used space hardly 20TB to 30 TB and few VM’s are growing daily nearly 20 GB so in my case which size i should consider and how do i calculate the total capacity and make solution for this?? Total capacity of data to be protected Total capacity of physical data Total capacity of virtual machines Total VM’s – 220? Total Physical – 12? Disk retention on both sites

Client Computers shows all VMs that ever existed

Hopefully this is an easy one? When I “Show Virtual Machines” on the Client computer tab in user preferences I can see every VM that has ever existed in my environment (VMware). Is there an easier way to clean this up other than going through and right click deleting every client that I am sure will never be needed again? I realise why this would be the case as you may well need to restore a long gone VM but it’s such a mess! Thanks very much

OLVM proxy support

Hi! I’ve been wondering about proxy support for OLVM. If you look at docs there is an information that one should look to RHEV https://documentation.commvault.com/11.25/expert/129769_oracle_linux_virtualization_manager.html And if you go down that path you will find that supported proxies are: RHEL 6.5, RHEL 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 8 and Windows 2012R2, 2016 and 2019 https://documentation.commvault.com/11.25/expert/3358_system_requirements_for_virtual_server_agent_with_red_hat_enterprise_virtualization.html On the other hand using link 1) you will find that there is also another link for VSA support for oVirt on KVM, And if you go down that path you will find that supported proxies are: RHEL 6.5, RHEL 7 and CentOS 6.5, CentOS 7 Windows 2008R2, 2012R2, 2016 and 2019 https://documentation.commvault.com/11.25/expert/31916_virtual_server_agent_support_for_ovirt_on_kvm.html So both of this pages offers you somewhat different VSA requirements and it is unclear of which one should you follow

Unable to browse destination VM (Agentless recovery) to set the restore path

Hello, I am trying to restore a Linux VM guest file to same server. I am able to browse the data and select the file that I want to restore. Problem is I am unable to browse the destination server. I am sure that I am using the correct credentials for the vCenter to browse. However I could browse Windows VMs. Here is the error I get: specified parameter was not correct Am I missing any configuration or mono is required on FRE server? Hypervisor: VMWare LFRE: CentOS7 CV Version: CV11.23.17

Hyper-V install question

Hello, In the documentation for setting up a Hyper-V hypervisor for backup it’s stated that the VSA need to be installed on the commserve computer, I take it thats the commcell? Whats the purpose of it being installed there? Can someone explain the Hyper-V configuration maybe. I have done vmware hypervisors but no hyper-V sofar. Appreciate all help. //Henke

Hello, What is the best solution for VMware VSA backup, use of incremental or differential backups? currently we use incremental and synthetic fulls, is there any improvement for restores to use differentials backups instead of incremental? regards Juergen

Commvault generating two trap for single VM failure

Hi Everyone, We integrated the Commvault with SNOW to create a ticket automtically for each backup failure. We are getting two ticket for each VM backup failure. On Ticket for VM failure On Ticket for Subclient status Completed with Error The cause of the issue, Commvault sending two SNMP trap as per above condition. Do anyone having any solution or workaround for the issue? Thanks, Mani

CVVD.sys crash on 11.20

Hi, I’m on 11.20.85 and had a media agent/ VSA proxy reboot when doing restores. Due to the size of the restore (600 GB+), I restored the files to the proxy instead of going straight to the VM. The crash dump says: Probably caused by : CVVD.sys ( CVVD+d01b ) Is this a different issue since 11.20 isn’t a version listed to have problems? Thanks

migration vcenter 6.5 to vcenter 7

Hi Community, i have a question about migrating VM’s from a vcenter 6.5 to a new vcenter server in version 7. (the esxi and datastore layer still the same). Because of the migration to a new vcenter, is there a way to avoid duplicate vm name in the commcell (we plan to migrate more than 15000 VM) ? kind regards, christophe

Linux guest file restore

Hello, Is this a normal behaviour so that when you are trying to restore 1 file or maybe 2 files from granular browse of a VM and it restores that file together with all of it’s dirs leading to it? I mean the whole path. It should only restore the file into your selected location without any paths leading to it? We are restoring 1 file ‘19339’ to ‘Restore_Test_Feb22’ dir but you can see it restores whole path to it. Migration of VMs from on cloud To on-prem

Hello, Team Updated!!! Please, i have a prospect with this exact requirement. I got more clarity!! The VMs are hosted on VmWare VCloud (DC in London), and they are looking to migrate the VMs to EXSI host (managed with VCenter in a DC in Lagos). How do one go about it? add media agent to existing gridstor AWS

Hello team, I have actually multiple accounts on AWS 1 commserve is hosted on premise 1 commserve is on AWS (standby) Actually I have 2 media agents located in an account name common account (VPC Account) Also I have some other AWS accounts that use the Media agents located in the common account to backup the data (Intellisnap API + agents) we use the assume role to allow clients from others accounts to use the common media Agents that are located on the Common account. We have also 2 other media agents that are located on another account but they were used for test. goal : as the environment is already qualified we prefer to use the existing test Media agent to avoid to create new ones with new IP address in the Common account I want to increase the existing Gridstor located in the common AWS account with the Media Agents located in the test Account to get more performance We will have 2 media agent located on a VPC and 2 other located in another VPC but on the same gridstor also a qu

The problem Have you ever needed to know how much data you need to backup incrementally from your VMware environment? Because you need to design a new backup storage. Because you need to know, if your WAN is capable of transferring everything into the cloud or from your branch office? Because you need to know the change rates of your VMs? The solution Now you can track these data changes with a simple script! Let me introduce you to GetChangedBlocksV2! It is a PowerShell script which uses the VMware PowerCLI to read the changes from your VMware disks each time it is run and saves it as CSV. It keeps track of the changes between each run, between each day and between each week. In order to get good results, you need to run this tool on a regular basis, e.g., with the Task Scheduler. VM granular file restore FRE issues

Hi, I am trying to restore some files via live browse for VM in command center and I receive the following error: When I go to JAVA GUI it automatically selects the FRE but it fails with: So if I manually change to other FRE - it works:​​​​​ How else I can select the FRE for that VM, so it would not show that ‘FREL name is empty: File Recovery Enabler for Linux hasn't been set for this client. (CV.0x8).’

Converting from VMware to Nutanix AHV

Hello Commvault Community! I come today with the problem of virtual machine recovery by converting from VMware to Nutanix AVH. The Customer runs on the 11.20.85 environment. It has two Hypervisors configured - VMware and Nutanix AVH. Both have backup jobs performed before, so they are working properly. Restore speed vmware

Hi All. I am having issues with restore speed when restoring a vmware server. When a restore is done where “vCenter Client” is set to the vcenter, restore speeds are slow. When a restore is done where “vCenter Client” is set directly to the ESXI host and the vcenter is bypassed, we see a factor 4 in restore speeds. Anyone who can explain this behavior? I thought that the vcenter was only used for control data and not data movement. Regards -Anders
