Hello Community and Happy New Year!In a client, we have a primary storage policy using a Disk Library (DDB). Needed also a tape out (copy-2). The HPE tape library is already configured and accessible via MediaAgent. For these auxiliary copies (Copy-2) to tape, we need to create two distinct groups: Weekly backups with 4 weeks retention Monthly backups with infinite retention What is the recommended best practice?Stick with the default storage pool for both aux copy types (and rely on retention rules/scheduling to differentiate)? Or create two dedicated storage pools (e.g., "Weekly_Tape_Pool" and "Monthly_Tape_Pool"), assign specific tapes/drive pools to each, and configure the aux copy operations/rules to target the appropriate pool based on backup frequency? Also, it’s important the tapes to remain strictly separated, no mixing of weekly and monthly data on the same tapes! Thanks in advance for your insights and real-world experience!Best regards,Nikos
Hello Commvault Community, Do you have any news about problems using the AllowUnsetComplianceLockOnDRCopy key for SP36?The ability to remove the Compliance Lock for the Primary copy within the CommServeDR StoragePolicy works for lower (SP32 for example) and higher (SP40 for example) Service Packs.I currently have a case where this key doesn't work in three lab environments (SP36).It's added at the global level for the entire environment (CommCell level) and is set to true: When I go to the CommServeDR policy, the option to remove the lock does appear, but after accepting the warning and closing the window with "OK," it doesn't load this setting and back to the previous setting. And after closing: Any idea what is going on? Thanks in advance!Kind Regards,Kamil
Microsoft Teams Chat Backup Update Microsoft has made changes to how chat backup is billed and managed through the Teams Export API. As part of this update, Microsoft has stopped metering and billing for the Export API, which previously required manual configuration for chat data protection. 🧭 What This Means for Commvault UsersThe former Teams Chat Backup Settings option has been retired. With Microsoft’s change, Commvault now enables the Export API by default, ensuring 1:1 (user) chats are automatically supported in Commvault SaaS without additional setup. Channel chat: Supported through Free Protected APIs User chat: Supported automatically via the Export API Status: Implemented and active by defaultReference of the Settings [Chat backup settings] 💡 Why This MattersThis update simplifies chat protection and ensures seamless integration with Microsoft Teams without added licensing complexity. Commvault continues to align with Microsoft’s evolving API framework to maintain reliabl
Hello communityI am having an issue with getting the compliance lock unlocked on all secondary copies of my storage policies. i have completed the following Filled in the form under resources on the website to get compliance lock lifted, using Commcell ID, Primary Copy name and ID, secondary copy name and ID and also passphrase which is correct. killed all logins using Qlogout.exe -all Logged back in using an account in the Masters Group ran the following the xml file provided by Commvault only has the IDs for the primary copy and the secondary copy. It has no mention at all of the names of both the primary and the secondary
Hi all, has CommVault released install videos for CommServe on Linux with volume group and partitioning of Rocky Linux (11.40) by any chance? thanks Jules
Hello Experts,In recent research I saw that CBT is now available for Oracle OCI, also Metallic is supporting VSA with CBT enabled. Not sure if this capability is available for CommVault Cloud Software, can you help me with this question? Kind Regards.JT
Hi,I understand that recently compliance lock is available for disk whereas originally it was for S3 specifically. While I don’t see the option to enable it via Command Center, in the console tape copy properties have the Compliance Lock box to check. So my question is - enabling this on tape copies is or isn’t supported? thanks
Good morning,We are experiencing an issue with our Commvault environment related to copying data to tape, and I am hoping someone can help explain the behavior or suggest a fix.Currently, our Commvault system is configured to take weekly FULL backups of all file shares and VMs every Thursday. Once these full backups complete, they automatically copy to tape. This process itself works as expected. The problem is the volume of data being written to tape. Each week, I have to manually update the Copy Policy “From Date” to the Monday of the current week to ensure that only the most recent data is copied. If I forget to do this, the amount of data copied to tape increases significantly. For example:January 2026 Week 1: I set the copy date to Monday 5th January. On Thursday, approximately 100 TB is written to tape (usually completing by the following Wednesday). Week 2: I forget to update the date. On Thursday, it again attempts to copy around 100 TB. Week 3: I forget to update the date aga
Hi Guys,We are planning to upgrade our Commserve from 11.28 to 11.40 Version. Our Commserve is on a physical server. What should be the roll backup plan if the upgrade activity encounters an issue? Can we use the 11.28 version DR backup set on another machine while installing 11.40 version instead of using manual upgrade package? In case of Commserver upgrade failure, can we use DR backup file generated from 11.28 version and use the same file to rebuild commserver from 11.40 package on same machine? Or we need another machine(physical/virtual). (Can this be treated as a rollback plan?) If upgrade fails in between, will registries and binaries get corrupted or will they get updated or remain the same. Do we need to upgrade Index from V1 to V2 before upgrade as this all is running in 11.28(point to be noted, we are using Tapes as primary storage and disk backup is only used for commserver dr backup which happens on commserver itself.) Will content indexing get any problems since this is
Hi,I need to update the Commvault server to the specified version, but the server is offline.Which packages or software kits do I need to download? Thanks
Hello All: It seems that CV is moving in a Rocky Linux direction, so I thought it would be good to replace my Windows MA’s with Rocky. However, after chatting with Arlie it’s not supported for a Linux MA to backup Windows FS data (NetApp - NTFS vol). It can backup via NFS, however it will loose the ACLs.I have for years used Windows to backup Linux volumes, so it would seem logical it could work in reverse.Thoughts?Dan
Hi All, there was an option in the cloud.comvmault.com webconsole portal to use the staging feature. The DR Backup was uploaded and than an cs with restored db was created. An link with login credentials was provided. Now over the command center i dont see this option any more. Is it gone ? thanks for help
Hi All,I need some guidance on the best backup type to use for our domain controllers on azure vms. We are in the process of setting up a service account for the active directory granular recovery, however as for the VM it self what is the best Virtual machine backup type to use ? The options within the VM group configuration are as follows; Application AwareUses in guest application plug-ins to assist the Virtual Server Agent quiescing and providing granular application level recoverability.File System and application consistentUses VM restore point to perform a point-in-time application consistent snapshot of all the managed disks of the VM.Crash consistentUses Microsoft Azure software snapshot to allow a basic backup of the virtual machine.Application-based backupsPerforms application discovery and configures backups by installing an in-guest agent.
Hi,We have SP36 commserve and we tried to use the Nutanix Image with 11.36 available for download, but it doesn’t contain the /etc/initfrel_sc script that allows FREL to run. Please check the following image.https://cloud.commvault.com/commandcenter/#/softwareStore/33251The documentation appears to be out of date.https://documentation.commvault.com/2024e/commcell-console/deploying_file_recovery_enabler_for_linux_with_nutanix_acropolis_hypervisor_ahv_cluster.html I need the correct package containing the FREL activation script. Do you have any other image for Nutanix FREL? Regards,Michał
HiI have a problem with a Commvault LiveSync setup running with Rocky linux ver. 8.When I am doing a test failover all is looking good. But when I am trying to do a maintaince failover, the maintaince failover fails. It is faillling under the recovery process on the standby node with the error saying “Failed to generate new CS client certificate”. I have been trying to stop the selinux and firewall on both CS, and still are getting this error. Does any have a idea on what is the problem?
Hi Commvault experts,We are designing an archiving workflow and we’d like to get your advice on the best practices. Let’s assume the source is NetaApp with SnapLock volumes (WORM) and target LTO tape library with WORM media. Our goal is to move/archive data from NetApp SnapLock volumes to WORM tapes for long-term retention (10+ years). What is the ideal storage policy for this setup? Does it make sense to use a “staging disk” as a Primary Copy and then a DASH copy to the tapes, or is there a better workflow for WORM volumes (primary copy directly to tapes)? We are also choosing between two tape strategies. The first is a "Clean Archive" where data is written only once to save media. The second is "Periodic Fulls" where we write the full archive again every so often for better safety. Given that the source data is immutable, which approach do you recommend?Your input will be much appraciated.
Hello,We got an repmgr postgres cluster, the backup works fine when i run them manually with both FsBasedBackup and dumpBasedBackip.i have assigned a plan for the cluster client, but only the dumpBasedBackup jobs are runninng, the FsBasedBackups jobs dont even start.I would like help with that problem.
Hi team,We are building up a new infra in Azure to be responsible to back up all workloads running in Azure, which are currently managed by a Commcell running on-prem.Having that said, we want to migrate ONLY the Azure workloads from this Commcell to the new one, running in Azure. I know that Commcell migration is not supported for Azure, even on version 11.40 (we are on 11.36 latest MR): CommCell Migration - SupportReconfiguring the pseudo-clients and enabling again VSA backups, it's easy and has been done already. The problem is that there are VMs in Azure runnings DBs, where we do a combination of Filesystem and DB agents backups. What would be the quickest way to move the agents from one Commcell to another to avoid the manual work, as there are several clients? Any way that I can user Export/Import only to have the configuration done, then I can simply release the license on the old Commcell and reconfigure in the new one?I would really like to avoid this manual work, which anyway w
My VMware admin has created new datastores for a restore test but I don’t see them when I attempt a restore. How do I get Commvault to discover new datastores?ThanksKen[Edit] I’m running Commvault 11.36.83. [/Edit]
Incremental Backup Converted to Full (7.5TB+) following Synthetic Full Completion Problem DescriptionA recurring issue has been identified where incremental backup jobs significantly increase in size (bloating from ~1.5GB to 7.5TB+) specifically after a Synthetic Full backup is performed. In the most recent instance, the backup remained in a "Running" status for over 10 days. While the job continues to progress slowly due to limited bandwidth between the Cloud source and the on-premises Media Agent, the root cause is a logic failure in the backup chain.Technical Analysis Automatic Job Conversion: Commvault automatically converts an incremental backup to a full backup if it cannot establish a valid baseline or if the previous cycle did not close correctly.Cycle Disruption: A backup cycle starts with a Full/Synthetic Full and ends before the next Full. If the Synthetic Full (DASH Full) fails to properly sync its metadata index or deduplication signatures due to network latency, the subse

Hi,The maximum certificate lifetime is going down:From today until March 15, 2026, the maximum lifetime for a TLS certificate is 398 days. As of March 15, 2026, the maximum lifetime for a TLS certificate will be 200 days. As of March 15, 2027, the maximum lifetime for a TLS certificate will be 100 days. As of March 15, 2029, the maximum lifetime for a TLS certificate will be 47 days.Certificates for the Command Center (Tomcat web server) must be manually renewed and updated.Does CV have a recommended procedure to tackle this in future or should everyone find their own solution?/Piippu
Hello Commvault Community, We have this situation:There are MS SQL servers that have transaction logs backup during the day. Full backups are made only outside working hours. Sometimes, however, it happens that during the day, for some reason (the logs show that communication with the media agent was interrupted), a broken chain is made and the transaction logs backup is converted to full.Unfortunately, we can't do full house during the day, because it overloads the source servers. What we tried to do:1. Uncheck "convert" in the subclient properties - it did nothing, the backup was still converting.2. Do a "full data management" subclient blackout window for these servers within business hours. The workaround for blackout windows should work in theory, but if the conversion takes place, the job is still process in the JobController as "transcational log" and not full (although in reality it is already full). This is probably why the blackout window does not cover this job.The question
Hi folks, I want to ask, what is your SQL restore throughputs for large DBs.We have a 8.4TB database that takes around 18hrs to restore with average throughput around 478GB/hr.Wondering if this can be improved without introducing IntelliSnap.Network is not a bottleneck. SQL server is hosted on all flash array and the backup target is HSX. Cheers,Marcin
