Self-Hosted Q&A

Hello everyone, I'm seeking guidance and advice on configuring the replication of a Poweri server with Linux to another server using Commvault. I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide. Questions:What are the best practices for configuring Commvault for Poweri server replication with Linux? Are there specific considerations we should be aware of when setting up replication on Poweri servers? What aspects of Commvault should we configure to ensure effective replication? Are there any specific Commvault documentation or resources you recommend for this scenario?Any suggestions, experiences, or advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time and support!

How can we backup CIFS shares directly from a storage appliace using Commvault . We use Hyperscales appliances as Mediaagents for all of our storage policies. Until now we were using NDMP backups for these shares but now are moving away from Netapp.

Hello All.I’m a bit confuse about the DDB usage on Cloud Archive storage. From the Cloud Storage Building Block documentation…https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/139246_combined_storage_tier.htmlhttps://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/139247_archive_storage_tier.html...we can see Deduped and non-deduped are allowed. But from the Cloud Storage Best Practices it is strongly not recommended:DDB Backup on CloudMake sure that the cloud storage library does not have an Archive Object Storage class selected. DDB backups are not recommended on Archive Object Storage, like S3 Glacier/Deep Archive, Azure Archive and Oracle Archive. What are the reasons behind this strong recommendation?Tks in advance guys.Eddiie

Hi, Anyone have any idea on what is the limitation on number of VMs per subclient can be configured?Regardless of number of readers/writers available, this is for VMware environment. I couldnt find any information on BOL nor Google.  Thanks and regards,Lee

We currently have an 3 tier architecture with Vmware 7.0 and vcenter 7.0 with the commvault deployed in the VM.The Backups are running smoothly without environment. We are in the process of purchasing Vxrail and would be moving all our VMs from the old 3 tier architecture to new VxRail Appliance. We want to ensure all our existing Commvault backups and jobs and schedules configured with the old vCenter are successfully migrated to the new vCenter running on VxRail. How do we proceed with this

AADSTS700082 = The refresh token has expired due to inactivity. Getting this error when running “Verify connection” on several Teams backup tenants. How can the tokens become “inactive”?The refresh procedure for the Teams token is a pain, at least in our case.We either need to have a remote session with the customer and log in with our admin credentials in their environment, and have the customer enter their global admin.. Or they need to log in to a remote session into our env and enter their global admin credentials..None of our customers give us their global admin credentials, because we don’t want to request it, and in our experience the customers are hesistant if the subject is brought up.Even with contracts specifying that we'll only use our access for the backup service, it's impossible to guarantee 100% that individuals won't have malicious intent or make mistakes. It’s a big ask.So is there another way to refresh the token?

Hi,I understand that Commvault only backs up (User / Group / Shared) Exchange Online Mailboxes with a Microsoft mailbox license assigned. Is this correct? If this is correct, is there a possibility to automatically exclude from backup all (User / Group / Shared) Mailboxes without a Microsoft mailbox license, so that for once in a lifetime the Exchange Online backup can complete succesfully without any mentioning of failed / skipped mailboxes?Thank you so much!

We found a few clients that did not have a plan so we were not getting a message that it wasmissing backups. Is there a report that would give us this info? or is there a way to know?Thank you -

Does anyone still use SharePoint Document agent?  Everything can be recovered by restoring content database.  Using document agent seems like a waste of resources

The customer has single nas client with an ndmp agent that is used for a snap primary and its backup copy. The snap primary has a non-dedup storage pool, the backup copy for that snap primary is dedup’ed and writes to a storagegrid. The customer wants to stop using the ndmp agent and use cifs/nfs agents going forward continuing use of the same storage pools with no interruption or negative impact.  Would this agent change have an impact on the storage pools ? Or can they create new subclients under the cifs/nfs agents, using the same storage policy and then use the same storage pools with no interruption or sealing of the storage pool ?

Is there any way to specify within a VM Group an affinity for certain access nodes for certain backup types? I am using Auto transport mode because most of my VM’s can utilize my Windows MediaAgent VM’s for HotAdd, however a few of them need to fall back on NBD. When they do NBD via our HSX nodes, they get great throughput and the jobs finish quickly. However, they are often selecting the Windows MediaAgent VM’s for NBD and the throughput is abysmal, causing the jobs to take 5-7 hours longer than they should to complete. Is there any way to control this within the VM Group? If not, has CommVault ever considered adding access node affinity/anti-affinity as a feature? Or perhaps modify the access node selection logic to reference the throughput/runtime of past jobs and realize that selecting incredibly slow access nodes for NBD is not a good idea?

Any chance to run pre script and post script for Azure VM Intellisnap? If yes, which script language supported by Commvault?

Hi Vaulters, This is a topic in which I already created multiple threads and read a lot of them here, but still confuses me, it’s still a bit confusing, on how the process may be implemented in the right way. Basically, we wonder how WORM can be implemented on a Disk storage type library which has WORM capabilities. There are tons of topics regarding cloud storage, but wonder how the process works with On-prem Disk libraries. We are seeing that, enabling the WORM from storage side may increase the BET to 2x to 3x.Would there be a DDB sealing in case of a disk library …etc. ? We would love to get a simplified overview on how the implementation could look like and how the pruning would work in this case. All your advices are welcomed. Regards.

Hi Vaulters, We have a new CV platform that will be deployed soon, the Infra that will be backed up is all virtual based on VMware 6.7. Regarding design, we are checking which transport mode is the most suitable in our case, and as of now, since the VMs are hosted on datastores residing on a Storage Disk Array, it looks like SAN mode is the most efficient way to back up our VMs. Can anyone give us the right steps to implement this ? A step-by-step procedure, since we couldn’t retrieve this on the documentation. We are also looking for HotAdd transport mode, which also seems feasible in our case.Overall, what are the pros and cons of each tranport mode (SAN and HotAdd) ? For example, we read that restore performance is poor on SAN mode when VM disks are thin. Kind regards.

Hello everyone, Recently I configured the SSO in Commvault, with Windows Active Directory Domain. Users can login in the Commcell perfectly, but when I open the Command Center URL in the CommServe Server, I am unable to login with the SSO, it’s always asking me to put my credentials. This doesn’t happen when I select Command Center option in the Commcell Console.I don’t know what configuration is missing, or what should I do fix this. Has anyone experienced something like this?We are using 11.28 (2022E) with MR87. Thanks.

As per KB 67279 https://ma.commvault.com/Article/Details/67279, when instance validation fails for SQL iDA, the job gets queued until you fix the account. How do we change this behavior and turn this feature off? We need the job to fail in this case, as we are an MSP and have automation built off of the failures of these jobs.  If the job stays queued forever, it will never generate a ticket for us and won’t get fixed.  In fact, I found two jobs which were queued since June/July because of instance validation failing.I do not want any jobs to queue, unless I turn on queueing options in Control Panel.

Good morning people, everything fine?Eventually this Completed w/ one or more errors message appears and when I look at the logs, it only appears in the description: Unable to make a backup copy of folders [0] and files [81].What can this be? Was the copy successful? or is this normal?

Hi,is it supported to install a Linux CS and the MA on the same hardware?Kind RegardsFlorian Kaiser

Hello All. Thank you in advance for your assistance. For a selective tape copy I need a means to ‘guarantee/force’ only Fulls from a given month are written to a single tape. Is there a way to do this ?  I would be interested in knowing how to ‘guarantee/force’ only jobs from a given month onto a set of tapes as well.

I had to turn off backing up of a specific VM utilizing the “do not back up” option in the ellipsis drop down.   I would like to turn backing up back on.   How do I do that?Product: MetallicHypervisor: VMwareVM OS: Windows 2019Hosted in: Azure VMware Solution

We were thinking to try out the Commvault containers images in combination with Tanzu, but we would like to provision by making use of an authcode instead of username and password. Can't really find if this is possible and which attributes I should use to populate the authcode.

any help

We want to install the commvault client automatically on a new linux server.We are using the linux_commvault.tar, extracting it to a temporary folderand copying our custom default.xml to that folder.The installation of the subclient is working as expected.What we are missing - how to define the StoragePolicy in this config ?We just defined the 'storagePolicyName' but it did not work.What is missing? The default.xml file (with jinja2 variables as a placeholder):<?xml version="1.0" ?><CVInstallManager_ClientSetup Focus="Instance001" JobID="0" OEMID="1" Operationtype="0"> <ClientAuthentication> <userAccountToLogin domainName="" password="" userName=""/> </ClientAuthentication> <CommServeInfo networkGateway="{{ commvault_hostname }}"> <CommserveHostInfo clientName="" hostName=""/> </CommServeInfo> <clientComposition overWriteClientHostName="1"> <clientInfo> <client clientCertificate="" cvdPort="" installDirectory="">
