We’re in the process of moving from VMware to Hyper‑V, and I’m seeing a pretty significant difference in IntelliSnap performance. Our Hyper‑V IntelliSnap jobs are averaging around 57 minutes, while the same workloads on VMware average 5 minutes. Is this typical for Hyper‑V environments? I’d really like to hear what snapshot durations others are seeing with IntelliSnap on Hyper‑V. Below is a chart comparing the two platforms. Each line represents a snapshot job. As you can see, the VMware jobs all complete within roughly an hour, while the Hyper‑V jobs stretch across a five‑hour window, which isn’t ideal for maintaining a tight RPO.Thank you,
Does Commvault support NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics, including NVMe over TCP)Arlie says:Commvault does not support NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics, including NVMe over TCP) as a transport protocol for VMware VM backups. For VMFS datastores presented via NVMe-oF, you must use alternative, supported protocols for backup operations.Documentation (SAN Transport for VMware) NVMe-oF SAN is supported with VDDK 8.0.3 and higher using Linux access node only.I am a liitle bit confused now ….Regards,Thomas
We have newly installed RHEL 10 servers for MediaAgents and we want to use them as VMWare Access Nodes. We have noticed that there is no documented support for VMware AccessNodes on RHEL 10 in docs. Does anyone know if there are any issues configuring these MA’s as Access Nodes for VMware at this point? /Patrik
Hello Commvault Community,I am currently working with Commvault version 11.42 and testing backup and recovery features for OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt).I have seen information stating that file-level restore for OpenShift Virtualization is not supported, but I have not been able to find this limitation officially documented.Could you please confirm whether file-level restore for VMs running on OpenShift Virtualization is indeed not supported in Commvault 11.42?If this is correct, can you share an official Commvault documentation link where this limitation is mentioned?Having this clarification and documentation would help us properly communicate the capabilities to our teams and customers.
I am receiving the following error in the backup of a Hyper-V VMError code: [91:148]Description: There are too many existing backup snapshots on virtual machine [ServerName]. Backup snapshots are being cleaned up, but manual intervention may be required to ensure that all snapshots are removed. This may indicate that the storage is unable to keep up with the I/O activity of the virtual machine during a backup.Source: cs0003, Process: JobManagerWhen I look in Hyper-V Manager, I see no checkpoints for this server, so I’m unsure how to resolve this. I assume it’s possible it may resolve itself over time, but this has come up the last 2 backup cycles.
Hi, We got an error message on snapshot when we tried to backup a vm with a passthrough disk. We use xcp-ng as hypervisor (XenServer). We just started the implementation of Commvault in a brand new VMware environment. Now I'm seeing already an increased amount of duplicate client computers in our environment causing some administrative nightmares and management challenges. So I started investigating it and discovered the UUID registration to differ from what I'm used to when comparing it to AWS. It appears the registered UUID in Commvault is actually the so called PersistentID/InstanceUUID and this one can't be tracked back from within the VM itself. The UUID that is shown from the OS corresponds to the VMware BIOS UUID. We installed some client agents first followed by the configuration of the VSA agent. Both are being used actively. Fixing duplicate client names is an annoying tasks, especially in MSP environments and I'm puzzled this hasn't been fixed by Commvault. Because when you would use the combination of Commvault client name + BIOS UUID and the name that can be read by the client including UUID than matching
We are retiring a VMware DC and the admins are moving the VMs from the original vCenter to a completely different vCenter. I believe they are cloning them but not 100% sure. Anyway, we have been removing the VM from it’s original user defined subclient in vCenter X and adding it to a new subclient in vCenter Y. The VM name and vc.uuid has not changed. I noticed when we do this we now show two defaultBackupSet’s under the clients VMInstance - defaultBackupSet and defaultBackupSet_Vir-NewOne. After 7 days, we start getting alerts that the VM hasn’t been backed up in 7 days under the old VC and subclient. Trying to understand why CV is doing this and if this is fine or should we be moving these differently? And why, if the VM no longer is in the old subclient would CV thinks it should still be getting backed up thru it. Thanks.
Hi. If I vmotion a VM that is currently in cluster A, to a new greenfield vcenter let’s call it cluster B, I assume that the UUID will remain the same but will Commvault see that VM as the same and backup history will follow?
Hi,Is it possible to show which user and what files were download from the WebConsole? For example, if I’m restoring any file I’m getting a job with details, but for the download action I can see the action in the audit trail report but with now details of the user or the file itself, I can see only the browse action of the folder Thanks
Hi everyone,I’m planning to convert virtual machines from VMware to Hyper-V using Commvault’s “VM Conversion” feature. The official documentation https://documentation.commvault.com/11.42/commcell-console/converting_from_vmware_to_hyper_v.html mentions that a Windows Server 2012 R2 host is required as the destination system. Is this requirement still valid, or is there support for newer Windows versions? best regards,Andreas
Hi all,One of our customers is backing up a Red Hat OpenShift environment with Commvault. Using CV 11.40.xxI have some employees of this company in my training, and one of the guys asked me whether it is possible to restore a cluster to a DR site with a different cluster ID. They are having trouble with the Cluster ID, that's what I understood. SInce I have no experience at all with Open Shift, can anybody shine a light onn this? Thanks and kind regards,Henk
Hey Guys,I have a question. My customer has several Windows 11 VMs on his Nutanix. The problem is we cannot backup them. I have already read here in the forum that you should simply remove the vTPM. But this is not possible for this customer. Does anyone have this case?Surely it must be possible to back up the VMs anyway?
We have been experiencing checkpoint backup failures for VMs on Hyper-V Failover cluster. The CSVFS volume is having 30% free space. How much is the free space needed for the VSA backups to complete for Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual machines. In VMware it is recommended to keep 10% free space on the datastore.
Dears,,I created a new linux virtual machine and installed the Commvault Virtual Server package on it in order to use it as a VSA Access Node for our vCenter environment. However, the server does not appear as an available Access Node, and I am unable to use it for VMware backups.

Hi,I’m trying to back up virtual machines in my OpenShift Virtualization cluster. I’ve already deployed the Access Node within the cluster, and in the Commvault console, I can see the namespaces and pods listed as applications. However, the VMs are not being discovered by the Commvault server. This setup is running in a lab environment, and I’d like to understand why the VMs are not appearing. Could this be due to a misconfiguration, a licensing requirement, or another limitation that prevents Commvault from backing up OpenShift virtual machines?
Hi, We have some Commvault supplied ova’s that are deployed in our environment running Oracle Linux. Recently there has been a CVE for VMware Tools and we were looking at ways to update that on these boxes. They don’t seem to be locked down like an appliance. Has anyone else had experience in updating VMware Tools on these? Thanks
Why suddenly the files and folders inside the installation directory of my onprem backup gateway server lost. Even when reboot it nothings bring backup. Does it is a known issue that something needs to be done to become persistent when deploying the OVA?
Dears,,I have tow large VMs > 14 TB . it will take many days to full or incremental backup . what are the best configuration to implement this VMs .I have ocean protect Huawei storage. I don't create VSA for this Vcenter .
Hello Commvault Community, I've had a similar problem in other environments before, but I didn't investigate further. Currently, after upgrading from SP28 to SP32, a communication problem occurred in one environment for an OLVM backup. Hi Experts,I am new to IntelliSnap. What I got to understand after reading is that with IntelliSnap based VM backup,A snapshot of the VM at vCenter level will be taken as well as a snapshot of the whole VMDK disk at the storage level. Then VM snapshot at vCenter will be deleted. The VMDK luns need to be zoned and assigned to physical media agent. Question: How will this array-based snapshot be assigned to MA? Then the data from the snapshot goes to MA to the storage. Question: It requires separate policy, right? The backup process is LAN-free and over SAN only. Right? Then how does the restore work? Is it also LAN-free and over SAN? Thanks ahead. Kindly help me.Quazi Ashfaq
Hi,I'm facing an issue after deploying the CommServe OVA on a Linux-based system (Rocky Linux) under VMware. After deployment, when I check the services, I get the following error:systemd-coredump[55307]: Process 54709 (dotnet) of user 0 dumped core. The CVWebserverBridge service is shown as N/A in the Commvault services list, and I’m unable to get it to start.I’ve tried replacing the embedded .NET runtime with various versions (e.g., 8.0.14, 8.0.16), but the error persists. This leads me to believe the issue may be with the OVA itself, or the image might be corrupted or misconfigured.I'm currently using Commvault version 11.40.Has anyone encountered a similar issue, or is there an updated OVA or workaround available? Thanks in advance.
Dear all, We are new with Nutanix, and company has the need of integrating Nutanix 7 with our commvault platform. We are using 11.32 and base on documentation it’s supported. Our concern is whats the component that we have to add during the integration?Prism Central IP Prism Element IP (nutanix node) Base on all the documents we have read we still have many doubts. Even after watchign these video:Commvault v11 - Nutanix AHV support preview Any help is welcome.ThanksPatricio
Hi Team,We have multiple VMware VMs running MySQL databases. We do not want to install any Commvault iDataAgent inside these VMs and plan to perform agentless VSA (VMware snapshot-based) backups for them.Could you please confirm the following: Whether agentless VMware snapshot backups for these MySQL database VMs provide application-consistent (MySQL-consistent) backups ? In case of VM restore (either in-place or out-of-place), will the MySQL database be recoverable without any corruption or data inconsistency issues? Will the database be restored to a consistent point-in-time corresponding to the available recovery point of VM ? We want to ensure that database consistency and integrity are maintained during backup and restore operations without deploying the MySQL iDataAgent.
