Encrypting network traffic at the CommServe.

Hi Community, Was exploring this setting from security point , had few doubts. https://documentation.commvault.com/11.24/expert/125170_encrypting_network_traffic_at_commcell_level.html Does Encrypt network traffic at the CommCell level means we are encrypting communication which is happening within Commserve ( i guess communication with CS database ) and this setting doesn't concern about the communication between CS and Media agents or Clients ? if this is not the case , what type traffic actually we are encrypting using this setting and how can i check if my current traffic within CS is not encrypted ? An real example if i dont enable this setting , what could be the possible impact to my CS . What changes will happen to my CS after enabling this settings , any impact to backups and restores , dedupe , aux copies etc ? If i enable this setting and do not perform next steps which are Enforcing and Encrypting Automatic Tunneling to clients and encrypt backup data , does enabling this s

Chunk and Block Size for Cloud Libraries

Hello all, I am trying to find some specific guidelines for Block and Chunk settings when related to Cloud Storage. The information I have found is generally related to Disk and Tape Media. I have been reviewing an environment that uses Chunk settings of either ‘Application setting’ for Primary Copy and a mixture of ‘Application copy’ and 4096 for secondary copies. Block size has been set to 1024 and in other cases set to ‘use media type setting’. I am wondering what the best practices for these settings are and if any of these user set settings are overridden?

Changing storage policy for a subclient

Hello, I have a simple question. Is it safe to change storage policy for a subclient? Is there any data loss posibility? Do remain old data in the old storage policy? I am asking because I need to temporarily change disk library to tape library and because data are not synchronized it is not possible to promote secondary copy to primary.

Using Ansible playbooks (and/or Powershell scripts) for Media Agent installation and configuration

Hi, We are gradually automating our infrastructure (IaC) and need to automate the installation and configuration of CommVault Media Agents. Any good resources on that subject here or elsewhere? We also want to deploy a Media Agent on a Windows device in Azure order to backup a datalake (ADLS Gen2). So, the Media Agent needs to be configured with an ADLS Gen2 for it’s library. Any automation/scripting tips on that?

Information extraction from log files for SIEM/SOC

Hi, I'm looking for documentation around the ability to index logging related security events for SIEM/SOC purposes. Commvault software by default generates tons of log files and for me (and I suppose a lot of other customers) it is hard to get specific information from the Commvault logs for different purposes then troubleshooting. Besides that I'm looking for guidance on this, just to make sure the information can be collected in a consistent way so you are safeguarded that a future update will not break this. I'm especially looking for information how to get all information from the logs that gives me insights in things like: ​​​​​Activity via REST API, Command Center, CommCell console, Apps, etc. Activity towards (and through) network gateways. Activity to/from functionality with external components like external REST API's, Key Vaults. Communication between client computers. Data retrieval e.g. who is retrieving data from the platform via a restore, download functionality in Comma

Automatically export log bundles for job error

This is simple but working trick to maintain Commvault. Backup jobs might fail at night and you'd like to find out the cause of errors, you need to collect log bundles in the first place.But when you realize the errors after a while (say couple of days later), job logs might be rolled over, important information which would contain the error messages gone. To avoid this situation, you can setup various alerts, collect logs immediately after you receive any.This also cumbersome so you can introduce simple workflow which can be called at the same timing of alert, also collect logs automatically. Rough process as follows: Generate an answer file for "Send Log Files". This procedure is utilizing Save as Script, which can be saved most of user operations with parameters, generates .bat file and XML file. Migrate backups from Commvault to Metallic BAAS?

Is there support for migrating backups from Commvault to Metallic BAAS? We started using Commvault 3 years ago. Now Metallic BAAS looks like a better fit for us. Our preference (if we switch) would be to not keep the Commvault for just those 3 years of backups. We would like, if possible, to import those backups into Metallic BAAS. I know if we changed to a different brand, this would not be an option, but since both are Commvault based, I figure I would ask.

Generate shell files directly in servers via Workflow

This is simple but working trick to maintain Commvault. Via Workflow built-in activity "ExecuteScript", you can call arbitrary shells (both on Windows/Linux) remotely.If you have full access to the remote server and able to place scripts, or if the script can be called via Workflow, no issues.But if you'd like to modify the script remotely for OS-side schedule jobs (Task Scheduler or crontab), it's slightly difficult to control this process remotely, since Commvault can restore the script but not so easy to modify the content itself. Use Token for legacy CLI access

This is simple but working trick to maintain Commvault. When you want to start (typically backup) jobs via CLI instead of Schedule Policies, it involves qlogin in the first place to log into CommCell. This command is mostly straight-forward to use but when trying to invoke multiple jobs from one server it arises some errors, like Error 0x10b: User not logged in, Error 0x208 Token file is corrupted or relevalt errors. As BOL explains -f parameter to use Token file as follows: When using qlogin without -f option, it generates a file named "qsessions.OS-User, directly under Commvault installation directory.This file must be created with administrative privilege on this server to modify installation directory, also need to exist until any qoperations called in the shell (like qlist job), then it will be removed when the shell calls qlogout.This default token file is generated per OS user, not Commvault user so if multiple shells are called simultaneously it uses the same qsession file. MA Decommission hosting GDSP - Is there a way to migrate but keep the Storage Policies in tact?

Hi Commvault People, I have a tidying up exercise to do, which will ultimately involve this:- 1 - Decommission two MA’s currently working as partitioned dedupe (lets call, them MA3 and MA4) 2 - Migrate workloads to remaining MA’s, also with their own partitioned GDSP configs. Lets call them MA1 and MA2. 3 - Noting that Storage Policies on MA1\MA2 versus MA3\MA4 have very different retention. I know that generally speaking, you can easily reassociate to another SP and away you go, but that’s only useful if you have matching retention. The issue I have is that my MA3 and MA4 Storage Policies (whose ma’s I want to retire) are set to Infinite retention. The Storage Policies on the remaining ma’s (MA1\MA2 are not). So If I want to migrate the workloads away from MA3 and MA4, is it possible to somehow keep the Storage Policies in tact that were previously associated with MA3 and MA4. I would prefer to keep them in tact to avoid yet more legacy and historical SP’s clogging up the environment.

Explain like my manager is 5 years old, Data Written, Application size, and Size on disk?

We are low on space. As we look through old jobs, or anything that is still being held on past our retention period. We have plenty of infinite and long term retained items mixed with our regular data in our primary DDB. I’m claiming that the infinite retention or long-term jobs could be hodling reference blocks. This is the reason why we see data size on disk being a reasonable number but the library being full. For example, 800 TB size on disk but the 1.5PB library is full. as we go through jobs, some are seen as not “big fish” because data written may show for example 85GB written for a 1.5TB App size server. We skip and don’t worry about this because, I’m told well 85 GB is only what will come back in space. Let's look for 1TB + being written. I’m thinking that even as we size our future library, we should consider a pool of space that will always sit there and hodl these reference blocks and be “unuseable” space. Hopefully this rant makes sense?

Workflows: Utilizing the workflow activities in a script

I need to access a some information at the beginning of the workflow, specifically I need to do a query on the fly in order to populate some dynamic form fields. In order to do this I think there are two options. The first is option is to instantiate the CommserveDBquery class and use the output, I was able to find the class definition but a few things are not clear. The following screenshots will hopefully make it clear. This a is screenshot of the class definition, the assumption being that the fields that needs to be populated are “CommCell” , and sql. This is the code I came up with to do it. You can see that the things I don’t know how to define is “resultset” and “activitycontext”, this makes since typically within the workflow “activity” is contextual so executing an activity that is not connected to the workflow would need to be populated. How to get rid of WORM copy in primary DR policy

Hi all! as time went by, the disk space on the disk library associated with CommServerDR policy is full. Unfortunately, on the Primary copy of the CommServerDR policy WORM Copy settings has been enabled. Even worse, the retention period has been set to infinite. Would it be feasible to move the mount path/the disk library to the different disk and then concurrently create new policy copy in CommServerDR policy, that could be set as primary instead of current one? Or is just the only solution either reinstall all CV environment (as it is DR policy) or to ask support for eliminating the WORM copy? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

SCOM Monitoring

Hi, According to the docs, https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=5430.htm , the following needs to be done in order to send alerts to SCOM: == From the CommCell Console ribbon, click the Home tab, and then click Control Panel. Click SCOM. In the SCOM Configuration dialog box, type the fully qualified host name of the SCOM Server. Type the credentials required to connect to the SCOM Server and click Apply. Note: The credentials must be for a user who has administrator rights to the SCOM Server == The problem is: Our scom administrator don’t want to give admin permissions to an external tool which they don’t manage. (neither do I). Is there a way to implement the scom monitoring without that part? (the management pack can be loaded on the scom of course)

HyperScale 1.5 Reference Architecture Upgrade

Hi All, We are running the HyperScale 1.5 Reference Architecture with RHEL on top of HP Apollo 4200 Gen9 servers. Now we planning to upgrade the OS to 7.9 through CV FR upgrade. I have few quries and would like to hear from people who did the upgrade already. As per CV, the upgrade takes around 60-90 min. What would be expected duration per node in real world. Is there any firmware pre-request required for this upgrade? Does anyone reverted the change successfully ? If yes, how long it takes per node Do we have any check point to validate the upgradation once completed for first node? instaed waiting till 6th Node upgrade. Thanks in Advance Mani

Load Balance Index Servers: Precautions, impact to running

Hi, I’m wondering if there is any reg key that can be set for the subclients, in my case a Cloud Apps virtual client where the content rarely changes, so almost every day we get multiple 17:11 errors. Isn’t there some way to set a key that says “I don’t care if you didn’t find any content in the scan?” thanks

Unable to browse destination VM (Agentless recovery) to set the restore path

Hello, I am trying to restore a Linux VM guest file to same server. I am able to browse the data and select the file that I want to restore. Problem is I am unable to browse the destination server. I am sure that I am using the correct credentials for the vCenter to browse. However I could browse Windows VMs. Here is the error I get: specified parameter was not correct Am I missing any configuration or mono is required on FRE server?
