Hi,Below is my configuration:Commserve is VM machine and version is 11.24.103.Media servers - 1 is Physical and another is VM - Both are configured as Disk’s library (Disk’s are coming from Storage Lun’s).Proxy Node (Access Node) - Both media servers are assigned as access node.We have around 100 VM servers under a vCenter, so I have split 10 sub clients in each VM.I have selected the Auto mode and backups are running nbd most jobs.Currently, I can see the backup/restores are running very slow. Is there anything I can do improve the speed. Thanks in advance.
Hi,i have a question about the implementation of some VSA proxy in hotadd mode only on vmware VSAN.it is really needed to open network port 902 between VSA proxy and ESX host ? can we only open port 902 between Vcenter / media agent /vsa ?in my undestanding the port 902 is only use in NBD/NBDSSL mode as a fallback mode when other transport mode are not available.regards,Christophe
Hello everyone, I looked in the documentation, however, I did not find anything about it. How can I perform DR of on-premise VMware VMs using Google Cloud VMware Engine as target? Are there any restrictions or best practices for implementation? Thanks, 🙂Antonio.
Hi,We’re running into a strange issue with hotadd VM backups. For some VMs we see the error “Failed to download config file” and “Failed to open disk”. This is never for the same VMs over and over again, but sporadic and always for different VMs.We have two SCSI controllers defined on the Proxy and each controller has a “dummy”/”actual” disk as the first disk. (As advised by VMWare: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2075069Has anyone ever seen this issue? Any idea what might be causing it?
Hi,I am trying to setup vlab for a customer, following documentationhttps://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/expert/33029_creating_restore_as_lab_policy_for_vmware.htmland looking for Lab Gateway ova I got to the image on store.commvualt.comhttps://cloud.commvault.com/webconsole/softwarestore/store.do#!/133/617/6118which is very outdated to say at least - both OS and CV version this image is built on, are already EoS. Is there anything newer I can use for gateway?
Hi everyone,We are currently deploying a Commvault environment to protect via VSA a great amount of VMs (almost 6000VMs)VSA proxies are Windows Server 2019 SE VMs that reside on the same cluster that VMs we would like to protect. So transport mode will be HOTADD.We are currently on test phase so as to obtain results and determine the number of VSAs Proxies that finally we will deploy. The environment is the following: Commvault version: v11.24.7 VCSA: VCenter 7.0u2 ESXi Version: 7.0uw VSA Proxies O.S: Windows Server 2019 SE VDDK version used on Backups: 7.0.1As per VMWare documentation says on VMWare 7.0u2 each PVSCSI card on the proxy VSA should be able to mount 64 vmdks of the Backed-up VMs.The issueis that we are monitoring during the backup and each proxy is just able to mount 15 disks via hotadd (stucked on the previous limitation of VSphere 6.5)We have added manually more than 20VMDK disk on the Virtual Machine so we understand that this is not a VMware issue. The limitation arise
We would like to run a pre-backup script that freezes our IRIS database on a Red Hat EC2 instance, after the freeze is successful we would want to run an Intellisnap backup of that Red Hat EC2 instance and then once the backup completes, unfreeze the IRIS database. What is the best way to get Commvault to orchestrate this process ? Thanks
Hi,I have quite strange situation, we’ve intalled simpana 9 on an HPUX 11, first we’ve installed the with a firewalled envirnonment and it didnt work (it seems simpana 9 doesn’t like the firewall config)after that we’ve reintalled the agent with the firewall disabled on the client but the commserve stills tries to connect through the port 8403.Attaching to beta2rp*beta2rp*8400*8402 using XDR failed. Hi Guys,we’re running on Commvault 11.28.69Backup of VMs on a streched VSAN Cluster, where VSAs are deployed to both fault domains, enabling the use of hotadd transport mode in both locations. The backups are currently assigned to any available VSA, without honoring the fault domain. This creates additional WAN Traffic and also has an impact on backup performance.According to BOL this feature is available since 11.20New Features for Virtualization in 11.20 (commvault.com)I also defined bEnableClusterFaultDomainDispatch = true (should be default) on all VSA, but doesn’t lead to a proper VSA selection. Once the VM is not running on the same host as a VSA, any VSA is assigned. Are there any further settings to enable (or the other way arround to disabled) that lead to a propper asignment of VMs to VSA ?As a workaround, I now assigned the usable/wanted VSA now to each virtualization client’s subclient instead of the instance only. This restricts the VSA to the local fault domain only, but th
We currently have Virtual Machines replicating with Live Sync, Full is executed and then incremental, my question is, is there a way to prioritize that the Full backups are copied first and then the incremental ones, we see that it does not replicate the full VMs first, if not It seems that it prioritizes smaller VMs.
Hi All,we have to backup a large number of VM on Xenserver.I created Windows proxy and added it as access node. i was able to backup windows & linux Vm with this.but when I went for Guest file level restore then it was asking for FREL enable ( for both Linux & Windows)Then i added another VM in same host with linux os and enabled it for FREL with media agent role and then Guest level restore worked for both. Now, I want to use only Linux VM as proxy and want to get rid of Windows at all, Can i do this?I do not see any option to add non-widows Proxy as access node in xen pseudo client in commvault.Does it means , i will have to keep one windows VM as proxy for backup & one linux VM for FREL? it would be great wastage of resources . please confirm and suggest any workaround.
Hi Guys,I am doing namesapce and cluster restore in place. Restore completed succesfully. but clusterrolebindings names are being restored with different name. I tried with two option owerrite and nırmal restore .How can we fix it? Hello,To improve out RTO time we are thinking about following scenario:current we backup VM via VSA backup to MA, and AuxCopy then the data to a CIFS share which is sitting on a NetApp with SnapLock configured . In case of ransomware attack, we will restoration via VM restoration process from the CIFS share. In future we want restore in case of disaster direct the volume which host the VMsnow my question is possible to handle this during commvault completely? VM backup configured with IntelliSnap take snapshot on volume, then it triggers a SnapVault to a NearStore only for full backups (SnapLock configured), after this it takes backup copy for standard backup, where we have longer retention and possibility to restore single VM or single files….In case of disaster, we can restore full backup volume via IntelliSnap restoration then we restore VM backups from the standard backup. This should be much faster as restore whole VM from VSA backups.Question is will this work, or is there a thin
Good morning, according to the BOL arcticle below, it is crucial to check the order of SCSI ID numbers used for a virtual VSA in VMware.HotAdd Transport for VMware (commvault.com)The IDs used in my environment are different to the IDs in the BOL article. Can someone tell me whether it is posible, that I ran into the described situation ?The high number (1184) mentioned in the article is assigned to the ethernet controller, while SCSI Port Numbers seem to be in ascending order also digit-wise.we’re also facing sporadic file access errors as described in the arcticle, each time for different VMs BRKlaus
Hello, I have a fresh installation of Commvault version 11.28.56. I am attempting to connect to our vCenter instance through the Command Center GUI. After putting in the information to ‘Add Hypervisor’ I receive a ‘Request body is empty or format is invalid.’ error. Clicking equivalent API shows the following:{ "vcenterHostName": "172.16.123.10", "name": "vCenter", "accessNodes": [ { "id": 2, "name": "n1-prod-commvlt" } ], "userName": "vsphere.local\\administrator", "password": "cGFzc3dvcmQ=", "hypervisorType": "VMware", "skipCredentialValidation": false} Attached is the error. I have tried vsphere.local\administrator, administrator@vsphere.local, and a Windows AD account. I ensured the ‘VSA’ software was installed on the access node. Any help is appreciated!Error

Hi Team,we are running SAN Transport Backups agaings a Fully Automated ESXI Cluster. During the long running backup the DRS feature pops in and doing a Storage VMotion against VMs which are currently backed up. Eg VM on DS1 → is storage vmotioned to DS2 After the backup we still see all the “Orpahned Files” on DS1. We tried to utilize the additonal Setting “bDisableVMotionDuringBackup” which did not prevent a Storage VMotion during the backup. We are currently running 11.30.If i am not not wrong we saw in ealrier commvault Versions ( 11.28 ) a Taks in the VCenter → VM → Tasks like “DRS disabled” during the backup. ( not sure but maybe with Transport mode “NBD” this issue is not seen ) Anyone facing the same issue.
Hi,I’m currently experiencing issues with Hotadd backups using a VSA Proxy. The VMs running on the same ESX host as the Proxy are being backed up via Hotadd. However, VMs running on a different ESX host than the Proxy are being backed up via NBD.As described in the Documentation: “If the virtual machine and the proxy are not on the same host, all datastores must be shared between the hosts and the hosts must be within the same datacenter. “All datastores are shared between the hosts but they keep using NBD. I checked the logs and I can see Hotadd being disabled:6452 1724 06/24 07:27:12 XXX CVMWareInfo::AdjustTransportModeForBackup() - Disabling Hotadd for VM [XXX] on NFS storage hosted by [XXX]. Proxy is hosted by [XXX]What am I missing here?Any ideas are appreciated!
Hello CommunityAfter restoring a physical SQL server that is apart of a always on cluster to a vmWare VM the mount points did not work. The disks were restored in an offline state and could be brought online manually. However when using powershell to list the disks of the server it only found 1 disk.So the question is whether or not it is possible to use P2V to restore a SQL cluster?
Hello,I have 2022E version of Commvault server in Azure installed. Then I created a Windows media agent and one Windows Access node (VSA agent). I created a Azure cloud library and a server plan. Then I created an IAM AD application (the traditional authentication way) in Azure and then a hypervisor client in Commvault. Then I followed instructions for autoscaling of the access nodes: https://documentation.commvault.com/2022e/essential/128139_auto_scaling_for_azure_access_nodes.htmlI would like to present this functionality to the customer before it will be transferred to production. The configuration seems to be OK, but all test backups are running via the 1st access node I created before. Unfortunately I have only 4 windows VM’s for testing. In the documentation the condittion for creation of next access nodes are:“The Commvault software determines the number of access nodes to create based on the following characteristics: The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) The throughput rate T
Hi Good Day!Environment:One commserve to manage the backup of 2 Data centers in different locations. One vCenter to manage VMs of 2 DCs. It is in the stretched cluster the VMs shall move between the DCs.Question:What is the best method for selecting the VMs discovered in the local DC for backup? Do not want to load the VM backup traffic across the DC in a failover scenario. Could select the backup based on VM presented on the ESXi hosts in the local DC? Or can I use tag, Folder & Data Store based VM selection? Which method best satisfies the requirement?
Hi guys, I am struggling to find a balance between stream and datastore limits for our environment which has many datastores and clusters on a shared flash array (using SAN transport). The VSA client also contains numerous remote sites all backing over over NBD, all of which funnel to the same MA/access node. The MA has plenty of resources but is fast enough to really hammer the array.https://documentation.commvault.com/11.21/expert/31115_performance_tuning_for_backups.html is what I’m referencing but I see no clear cut way to throttle TOTAL datastore streams hitting the SAN but not limit all the various NBD-based remote subclients. Meaning - I can’t limit the streams of the MA without impacting the run times of all those NBD clients because they take hours to complete in some cases. Basically what I’m looking for is a way to have the proxy/access node tell “hey, all these subclients and datastores reside on the same array, so limit total streams for all those combined SAN streams to s
Hello!Customer used to run VMware backup using Netbackup, via NBD. They moved to Commvault and SAN transport mode.Happens that, even with few data readers (6), underlying storage (SAS+SSD pool on a DELL Purity) where the Datastores resides is suffering a lot. Overall latency goes so high that the production environment goes down. We are using HSX and SAN is 16Gb.Does anyone has any experience with situations like this? Any clue? Is HSX via SAN too much for their storage?Regards,Pedro
We have some strange issues with vmware backup for one of our customer, from what i can understand it looks like commvault has told vmware to take 2 snapshots of the same vm with 30mins between them. we have then had issues with too many cvlt snapshots on the same servers and my initial guessing is that it’s due to what we see from the vmware side that the cvlt serviceaccount has taken 2 snapthots and only removed one after backup is ok. Has anyone here had the same issues before and fixed it?
we are currently using 11.20 for our environment since this one is on LTS.if we upgrade on the newest version with LTS which is 2022e. do we need to purchase a new one or we can use the existing license that we have without paying additional?
