If we back up a new server one time and let's say it is 15 TB. We then release the license for said server, how long does it take for that for that 15 TB to return to the license? Is it based of the data aging jobs that run, or is there a certain number of cycles Commvault goes through to make sure the 15 TB is never going to come back?
Hi All,One small query, generally during VM based backup, commvault creates disk snapshot in azure - OS disk snapshot. Is it possible to create VM directly from the Azure portal using commvault created OS disk snapshot - likecreating disk from that commvault snapshot and build VM using the new created disk.is this approach feasible, or can it be restored using commvault tool only.
Hi All,I'm trying to do MSSQL backup. The database size is 450TB.Our disklibrary is HPE StoreOnce catalyst. Some time after running the job, the backup job fails to complete due to "Media Write Operation Failure-HP StoreOnce Media-Error writing to media".What is causing this problem?
I’m trying to launch a backup copy manually for testing purposes but it fails with the following error. Here is the log produced by this attempt.@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@Machine : comcellmachineFile : JobManager.log@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@2908 22f8 05/22 15:25:28 3075603 Servant [---- IMMEDIATE BACKUP COPY WORKFLOW request ----], taskid [49503], SP [samplepolicy]2908 22f8 05/22 15:25:28 3075603 Database No jobs to be materialized, ret = 2202908 22f8 05/22 15:25:28 3075603 JMGUIReport2::sendJobCompleted Sent job completed message to GUI.Launching an auxiliary copy works ok. Snaps are created on source and destination Netapp filers (using openreplication). We are running Commvault version 11.32.45.
HiWe have configured out DDB to spread across 4 Windows virtual machines. Out of 4 VMs we have lost access to 2 VMs. Backups are running as expected by using the remaining 2 VMs with DDB on that. Now we have freshly built new 2 VMs with Media Agent application components installed. My question is, how we can recover the DDB fragments which hosted on two lost VMs ? Is there a way to reconstruct the lost sections on to newly built 2 VMs ?We are on version 11.28.(2022 E).Appreciate your advise. Please feel free to ask any questions if you need further clarifications. Many thanks in advance.
Hi All.Can someone please explain how data aging functions on an Indexing job?Referring to "https://community.commvault.com/self-hosted-q-a-2/why-are-index-server-jobs-agent-type-big-data-apps-being-retained-on-storage-longer-than-the-storage-policy-indicates-5132".I have a storage policy with several copies to different libraries. This is a mix of disk, S3 and S3 with Object Lock enabled. There are several Indexing Jobs which reside on the S3 library with Object Lock enabled but the dependent backup jobs are located on a different selective copy. Is there a way to have the Indexing jobs kept with the backup jobs or is this by design? The issue here is that the Object Lock enabled library is configured with 90 days retention and the other S3 library is configured with long-term retention varying between 365 days to 1825 days. The above behaviour is preventing the sealed DDBs from being removed when all backup jobs have met retention as the Indexing jobs are retained.I have seen the inform
How to 100% verify the policy is in use, or has been ?
What is difference between secondary blocks and unique blocks in DDB
We observe that DDB Lookup raised upto ~70 % and consuming almost 15+Hours for ~6TB Data during incremental backupOur server plan includes 1 Full back up in every 14 days and incremental every day. We have 79 VMs producing ~85 GB Data per VM on daily run.
Hello,I have a question regarding secondary aux copy to tape.We have a storage policy where primary storage on disk with deduplication is on Media Agent 1. We have an Aux Copy to Tape, the tape library is on Media Agent 2. Where is the primary storage data rehydrated and stored before getting sent to the secondary copy?I guess I am looking how the data flows the from primary to the aux tape copy. Thanks in advance,Lance
Hi, I have a query about MediaExplorer usage for disk.We are sending the CSDB backups to Disk library(we dont have tapes). We regularly run reports for CSDB backup jobs. In case of disaster we will be having only JobID.The articles mentions to select volumeID where the CSDB job is writes. What report will collect the info about volume where the DR backup has written?Media Prediction report seems only applicable to tapes.Media Prediction Report - Overview and CommCell Configuration Report - Overview. https://documentation.commvault.com/2023e/expert/cataloging_media_using_media_explorer.html For a Disk Volume: Select the Disk option Browse to or type the drive path for the disk volume path. (For example, F:\, if F is the drive letter that holds the disk volume.) Optional: To add multiple mount paths, click Add Mount Paths. Directly beneath CV_magnetic folder, select the volume folder (V_nnn) in which the archive files reside, and click OK to continue.
I have a media server that has poor performance and was reading about using IOmeter to troubleshoot. It states to convert the disk to MBR if using GPT. I am wondering if GPT could be the reason for poor performance or if needing MBR is just an IOmeter limitation.Thanks.
Hello all, we just installed our new LTO9 tapes library. We tried to make a Tape to Tape Copy from LTO6 (old library) to LTO9 (new library) but after the copy, the new LTO9 tape is marked as full with only 2,36TB of data. Is there a possibility to copy some LTO6 to one LTO9 ?
We originally purchased 83TB for File & Object Storage. We originally had 12 file servers on a plan that was “daily for 30, and monthly for 365 days”. We are currently decommissioning all file servers (5 so far) and have migrated to Object Storage with Azure Storage Accounts. This is duplicating our storage quota, and we have now exceeded our purchased 83TB’s by 141% with File & Object Storage sitting at 116.3TB. So, currently with the 5 serves that are offline, I have unassociated the plan, and set the Server to not back up, and retired the server. But this will hold the backups till the retention period of 365days is met, then the data will delete. We are also holding onto the SAN and the old servers encase we need to powerup and access a server in a worst-case scenario for the year. If I delete the server, then all the data in retention will be deleted as well. and we want to be able to restore anything if we come across a file problem. Is there a way to reduce or delete the
Hello Team. I’ve come across Windows media agents with internal data storage in a raid 5/6 stripe (single logical disk in Windows) wherein instead of formatting the disk as a volume and assigning a drive letter to point the library in CV to a mount is created for CV to write the data to the disk. When I questioned the person who did this, his response was that long ago he read in CV docs this was a best practice to follow for security/ransomware prevention purposes; to make it harder for a bad actor who gained access to the server to read files on the volume. I myself vaguely recall this may have been a recommendation in the v8/v9 days. Does anyone have any knowledge of this configuration as a ‘best practice’, any docs ? Any comments as to the effectiveness ?
Hi all,can someone advice howto proceed with a snap copy in case of loss of the associated datapaths ?In former releases it has been possible to simply create a snapcopy associated with multiple datapaths and set it to use the default path and only alternate paths, if the default path is offline, to store the snap meta data. This was even possible, using non-dedup pools. Now I create a plan, that automatically uses the same (dedup) pool for the snap meta data as for the primary copy. This cannot be changed any longer. if the primary pool goes offline, I’m no longer able to create intellisnap backups, due to missing options to store the meta data.I can use the JavaGUI (not CommandCenter), to promote my secondary copy to primary and continue with sreaming backups, but IntelliSnap backups are no longer possible, because the snap primary is not available and cannot be changed.I’m also not allowed to delete the snap primary using the CommandCenter and create a new one, pointing to a non dedup
We want to run two backup jobs on a same VMgroup, using two different server plans which are configured to store backups on two different Object stores. We are also using same media agent; will it cause any issues? Thanks.
Hi Commvault gurus, Could you please advise me on how to add a new Media Agent to an existing backup infrastructure? What am I missing: there is usually a Global Deduplication Storage Pool that has a MediaAgent with its own Deduplication Database (DDB) with one or more partitions on local disks. How can additional MediaAgents access the already existing Deduplication Database partitions, which together with the Storage Library and MediaAgent, create the so-called Storage Pool? After installing the MediaAgent package, is it enough to click on the Deduplication Storage and add the Media Agents to the existing Storage Pool? In general, what are the best practices when extending the infrastructure?Any suggestions will be much appreciated!
We want to define a different Retention for any kind of Log Backups in a Plan.On Storage Policy it was possible to define a dedicate Log Storage Policy. In a Plan I cant see the possibility. We are on 11.32.Are there any way to this or future plans to integrate this for Plan Settings?Thx in advance and Best RegardsMarcel
Hello, can someone explain, how DDBs are queried, if new DDBs for a specific purpose are created ?Looking at the figures below, the VMs are leveraged among both DDBs, while only the initially used DDB has a severe amount of primary hash references.I know, that a new DDB is created and subclients are reassociated if a DDB reaches its limits (Q&I time and/or # of hashes), but I always assumed, that after the reassociation, some of the data is again identified as unique. The picture below let me assume, that old references are still honored and only new hashed are added to the currently associated DDB. If this was true, a new horizontal DDB does not automatically require additional space in the backend. thanksKlaus
I need to find out tape library WWPN details, can some one help quciky??
Hello, Please help me with the following question:Our primary copy will be stored in a backup appliance. Hardware deduplication will be used so we will disable Commvault’s deduplication for that copy. Our secondary copy will go to a object storage (on-premises). That storage can also deduplicate but the achievable reduction ratio is nowhere near what Commvault’s dedup can provide. So we would need to enable Commvault’s dedup for that copy.Isn’t it contradictory that CV’s dedup is disabled for primary but still needs to be enabled for secondary? what would be the right strategy for deduplication when having a backup appliance and a object storage in our backup environment? Would it be better just to use CV’s dedup and not take advantage of HW dedup? Thanks for the help!

Hi all,When adding CommVault Cloud (MRR) to on-prem - HSSX v3, Adding the Cloud Library only allowed a single node to be selected. Do you then have to share the Cloud Storage Pool to add the remaining HSX nodes and only then get an option to create additional DDB partitions, it seems to have changed since last time, are the partitions created when the additional nodes start to pick up backup jobs. Or do i still need to create the DDB/Cloud/P1 P2 and so on. CheersJules
